There have been four rounds for the BBL league draft; it was held on Sunday, September 1st, 2024. After the four rounds, these 14 English players were chosen to be a part of this league, and shockingly, only two Asian players have been selected: Pakistan’s Usama Mir and Bangladesh’s Rishad Hossain.
English player selection in the BBL draft rounds
In the first round of the BBL draft on September 1st, Ben Duckett was in the interest of the Melbourne Stars and was the first choice, while James Vince was the second-choice skipper of one of the teams from the Hundred League retained by the Sydney Sixers.
Laurie was chosen by the Melbourne Renegades, and pace gun Lokie Ferguson was picked by the Sydney Thunder. Hobart Hurricanes picked Shai Hope, and he was reunited with Ricky Ponting. Jamie Overton, the right-arm fast pacer, was selected by the Adelaide strikers. Rest, Colin Munro, and Finn Allen were selected again as they were pre-signed by their several separate teams, Brisbane Heat and Perth Scorchers.
In the second round, Tom Curran was picked up by his pre-signed team, the Melbourne Stars, as his team won the title of the Hundred League as well. The Melbourne Renegades selected England all-rounder Jacob Bethell, while the Adelaide Strikers, Hobart Hurricanes, and Sydney Thunder selected Olie Pope, Chris Jordan, and Sam Billings. Perth Scorchers passed on this round, while Sydney Sixers added their pre-signed player, Akeal Hosein.
During the third round, in the BBL draft, the Adelaide Strikers selected Fabian Allen, while the Hobart Hurricanes chose to pass. Sydney Thunder added Sherfane Rutherford to their roster, and Melbourne Renegades chose their pre-signed player Tim Seifert. The Melbourne Stars also made a selection, picking Usama Mir, the Asian player from Pakistan. Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers both passed the round.
Later in the fourth round, the Hobart Hurricanes made their final pick of the draft with the selection of the Asian athlete Rishad Hossain from Bangladesh, a leg spinner. Brisbane Heat added a left-handed batsman, Tom Alsop, to their roster.
Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers made selections, with Perth Scorchers choosing Keaton Jennings and Sydney Sixers picking Jafer Chohan. Several teams passed on their selections. Melbourne Stars, Melbourne Renegades, and Sydney Thunder all declined to pick a player.
