The ongoing IPL 2024 has witnessed a run-fest, with bowlers struggling to contain batting onslaughts. Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir, mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), has proposed a bold solution – switch to Duke balls instead of the currently used Kookaburra balls.
Gambhir believes the Kookaburra ball doesn’t hold up well enough over 50 overs, offering little assistance to bowlers. “If a manufacturer cannot produce a ball which can last for 50 overs, might as well change the manufacturer. What is this compulsion with only using the Kookaburra?” he questioned.
Duke: Ball for Swing and Seam
Gambhir suggests introducing Duke balls, known for their pronounced seam and ability to swing in the air. This would provide bowlers with more attacking options, creating a more even contest between bat and ball.
Renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle also called for a switch to Duke balls on social media, emphasizing the need for a “ball with a more pronounced seam, that allows more lateral movement.”
With batsmen frequently chasing down 200-plus totals, cricket analysts are actively seeking solutions to address the current imbalance. Gautam Gambhir and Harsha Bhogle’s proposal highlights concerns over the current state of the game and the need for a more balanced T20 format.
