Pakistan’s upcoming T20I series against New Zealand could see the surprising absence of two of their biggest stars – captain Babar Azam and pacer Shaheen Afridi. Pakistan head coach Azhar Mahmood revealed the possibility of resting the duo during the five-match series as part of their rotation and workload management strategy.
Speaking to reporters, Mahmood acknowledged the likelihood of Azam being rested. “It is possible,” he said. “Babar Azam can rest, but it will depend on the situation. We will view all aspects while making the decision.”
Mahmood dispelled rumors surrounding Shaheen Afridi’s fitness, declaring the star pacer fully fit. “Well, Shaheen Afridi is completely fit,” he said. “I have heard this news that he may skip the first two games against New Zealand. But this has come from the media and certainly not from us.”
Mahmood brushed aside suggestions that New Zealand will be fielding a weakened squad, stating, “The date suggests they have a wealth of experience in domestic cricket. They are their best talent, and in T20, no team is weak. I listen about B team and other stuff, but this is the New Zealand team, and they will play against Pakistan.”
The upcoming Pakistan vs New Zealand T20I series holds significance for both teams as they prepare for the T20 World Cup later this year. The five-match series is scheduled to start on Thursday, April 18, in Rawalpindi.
