With Pakistan’s announcement of boycotting the T20 World Cup 2026 match between India and Pakistan, the cricketing world is filled with questions.

The question being asked is what kind of punishment the ICC may impose on Pakistan and whether this is the first time that such an incident has occurred.

The much-hyped match between India and Pakistan, scheduled to take place on February 15 in Colombo, is now in jeopardy. The Pakistan government has already made it clear that they will take part in the tournament but will not play against India.

ICC Faces Tough Questions After Pakistan’s Boycott Announcement

According to reports, the ICC has urged Pakistan to reconsider their decision. Meanwhile, talk of taking tough action against the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has gained momentum. However, history reveals that match boycotts are not something new in World Cups.

In the past 50 years of ICC World Cups, very few matches have been boycotted. It is important to understand how the ICC dealt with such situations in order to forecast the future of Pakistan.

Teams That Boycotted World Cup Matches in the Past

1996 World Cup: Australia and West Indies Boycott in Sri Lanka

The first major boycott took place during the 1996 Cricket World Cup, which was jointly hosted by India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

Australia and West Indies boycotted their matches in Colombo.

This came after a devastating bomb blast by the LTTE in Colombo a month before the World Cup, which took the lives of 91 people.

Both teams expressed their serious concerns over security.

ICC Decision:

No fines or penalties were imposed.

Australia and West Indies lost their points.

Sri Lanka received a full complement of points, which resulted in them claiming their first World Cup championship.

2003 World Cup: England and New Zealand Both Refused To Play Their Matches

a similar situation happened at the 2003 worldwide championship held in South Africa. The English did not participate in their match against Zimbabwe because of the politically troubled state of Zimbabwe. New Zealand boycotted their match in Kenya due to security reasons.

ICC Decision:

Both teams forfeited their match points.

Neither team faced any punishment in the form of fines or suspensions.

Why Pakistan’s Case Is Different from Other Teams That Boycotted World Cup Matches?

Although the previous Teams that Boycotted World Cup matches were not penalized, the case of Pakistan is not as simple.

Contractual Agreement

Pakistan had agreed with the ICC and BCCI to play all their matches in Sri Lanka due to security concerns in India.

No Immediate Security Threat

In contrast to earlier instances, there have not been any recent security concerns and/or incidents that resulted in the decision to boycott the India match.

Politically Motivated Boycott

The boycott seems to be a politically based boycott.

Potential ICC Regulation Violation

Failure to play without a valid reason may amount to a breach of ICC tournament regulations.

Will Pakistan Escape ICC Punishment?

At this point, everything is up in the air. The final ICC decision will depend on the following:

• Whether a valid reason has been given by Pakistan
• Whether the boycott is considered a breach of contract
• The political sensitivity of the India-Pakistan relationship

If the ICC considers this a non-security, unjustified boycott, Pakistan will face repercussions that go beyond simply losing points, which is what happened to previous teams.

In 1939, George Hadlee, playing for the West Indies, scored two centuries in two innings of a Test match against England at Lord’s Stadium. He scored 106 runs with the help of 13 fours in the first innings of this match. Due to his innings, West Indies scored 277 runs in their first innings.

After this, George Hadlee also scored 107 runs in the second innings while batting brilliantly. However, this innings of the legendary player did not work for West Indies and England won this match with 8 wickets.

3- Graham Gooch

In 1990, Graham Gooch, the then captain of England, scored a triple century in the first innings of the match against India at Lord’s. Graham Gooch scored 333 runs in the first innings. Due to his innings, England scored 673 runs in their first innings while batting first. Gooch hit 43 fours and three sixes during his innings.

In response, India scored 454 runs in their first innings. In the second innings too, Graham Gooch troubled the Indian bowlers a lot and he scored 123 runs. Not only this, the bowlers of the host also bowled brilliantly in this match and England won the match by 247 runs.

2- Michael Vaughan

In 2004, former England captain Michael Vaughan scored centuries in both innings of the Lord’s Test against West Indies. However, the Player of the Match award in this match was won by Ashley Giles. Batting first, England scored 568 runs in their first innings. Michael Vaughan contributed 103 runs in the first innings. Apart from Vaughan, Robert Key scored a double century.

In reply, West Indies scored 416 runs in their first innings thanks to Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s century. However, England got a lead of 152 runs in their first innings. In the second innings, Michael Vaughan scored 101*, with the help of which England defeated West Indies by 210 runs.

1- Joe Root

In the match recently played at Lord’s between England and Sri Lanka, Joe Root scored 143 runs in the first innings against Sri Lanka. He hit 18 fours during his innings. Thanks to Joe Root’s innings, England batted first and scored 427 runs for the loss of all wickets. In reply, Sri Lanka was all out for 196 runs in their first innings.

Even though England scored 251 runs for the loss of all wickets in their second innings, Joe Root contributed 103 runs to it. England is in a very strong position in this match right now and Sri Lanka will have to bat incredibly to win.

James Anderson – The only seamer to complete 700 wickets and the highest total wickets in his career among pacers, shared his tip on the positioning of the seam for getting the swing on the ball.

The orthodox technique of swinging the ball advises holding the seam towards the fine leg for inswing by a right-arm pacer and towards the third man for outswing delivery, in addition to that, Anderson used his index and middle finger to get the revolutions on the ball for backspin.

For an inswing delivery, he gets his index finger on the seam while releasing the ball for the backspin. Similarly, for the outswing delivery, he positioned his middle finger on the seam to provide the backspin. This technique was used and implemented by him which resulted in making him one of the greatest bowlers in the history of cricket.

Adil Rashid – England’s leg spinner who consecutively gets to play for his nation and is one of the most successful bowlers on the team. He shared his tip on the significance of pitching the ball in which line and length for a leggie.

In the ODI World Cup 2019, he dismissed Virat Kohli when he was well settled on the pitch and was playing in his 70s, Adil bowled a leg spin with a great seam position which when pitched gave a quick sharp turn to the ball and hit the off stump direct.

Virat Kohli’s reaction was enough to show, what a great delivery that was with a perfect seam position, line, and length of the delivery by Adil Rashid.

Stuart Broad – The retired legendary pacer of England, holds the record for joint most wickets taken in test cricket alongside James Anderson. Stuart shared his tip on bowling a slower ball to a batsman with the same wrist position.

When a pacer releases the ball, he uses his wrist to flick at the end to get more pace on the ball. Stuart developed a technique of bowling a slower ball by not flicking his wrist at the end of the release and holding the ball with no gap between palm and ball. This results in bowling a slower delivery with the same seam and action to deceive the batsman.

Nathan Lyon – An Australian right-arm off-break bowler with 530 international wickets in Test cricket is considered to have the best technique for bowling an off-spin delivery. His run-up, action, and position of the front leg are highly noticed by the aspiring cricketers and many of them follow him for his brilliance.

He shared a tip on run-up and action used in bowling an orthodox off-break delivery. For rhythm, he marks a seven-step run-up which helps him provide the right momentum while bowling. He twists his body while releasing the ball from his front leg to get more revolutions on the ball and takes time to analyze the right pitching line and length.

One of the famous diamond ducks happened in the World Cup 2023 when in a match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, for the first time in the history of the cricket World Cup a batsman was given out because of the timed-out appeal by the opponents Bangladesh. 

Angelo Mathews of Sri Lanka became the first ever batsman to get dismissed due to a timed-out rule in the World Cup by the appeal of Shakib Al Hasan, the all-rounder from Bangladesh. 

2. Golden Duck – This kind of duck refers to when a batsman gets dismissed on the very first ball of his/her innings either by bowled, LBW, caught out, or stumps. Recently in the Test match between India and Bangladesh held in Chennai.

Akashdeep Singh took two consecutive wickets, including the wickets of Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque. Zakir got out on 3 runs whereas Mominul got bowled out on the first ball that he faced by Akashdeep Singh. 

3. Silver Duck – This duck refers to when a batsman gets dismissed on the second ball that he or she faces without scoring a single run via LBW, caught, stumped, or bowled. The most famous silver duck in the history of cricket happened during Sir Don Bradman’s final innings.

4. Bronze Duck – This duck occurs when a batsman plays three balls without scoring a single run and gets out at the 3rd delivery. This is one of the rarest and humiliating ducks for a batsman, after the 3rd ball if a batsman gets dismissed on any ball later than that then it’s termed as boring. 

5. Royal Duck – This kind of duck can only happen in Test cricket, it refers to when the opening batsman gets out on the very first ball of the innings. This duck is associated with the most famous Test series of the world “Ashes” between England and Australia.

6. Platinum Duck – This duck also happens in test cricket when the opening batsman gets out on the first ball bowled in the Test match. This has usually happened in the Ashes series.

7. Laughing Duck – This duck happens when the batting team is 9 wickets down and they just have one wicket left, if any batsman scores 0 and gets out, with him the team is considered all out and that’s called a laughing duck for the batsman who gets out.

8. Pair Duck – This duck refers to a situation when the batsman of both innings gets out on any duck in the same match.

9. King Pair Duck – These ducks occur when the batsmen in both innings get dismissed on the first ball of their respective innings of the team. The batsman could be the same too when he gets the golden ducks in both innings of the Test.

 For instance, if a batsman got out on a golden duck in the first innings, then when the opposition team comes to chase and the opening batsman of their team also gets dismissed on the first ball of their innings which means they get out on golden ducks, this is known as King Pair Duck.

1. James Anderson – 269 wickets

One of the finest bowlers in the history of cricket, James Anderson is England’s highest-wicket taker in both test and ODI cricket so far.  In ODI cricket, Anderson produced several  match-winning performances for his nation. In 194 matches, the legendary fast-bowler took 269 wickets at a decent bowling average of 29.22. The right-arm pacer secured 11 four-wicket hauls and two five-wicket hauls in his illustrious career from 2002 to 2015.

2. Darren Gough – 234 wickets 

Former England bowler Darren Gough is the second bowler with most wickets for England in ODI cricket. Gough made his ODI debut in May 1994 against New Zealand in Birmingham and played his last match against Pakistan at the Lord’s in September 2006.  

The right-arm pacer featured in 159 ODI matches for England. He claimed 235 wickets at a bowling average of 26.42. He took 10 four-wicket hauls and two five-wicket hauls in his ODI career.

3. Adil Rashid – 201 wickets 

Adil Rashid is recognized as one of the finest leg-spinners to play for England. Rashid is the only spin bowler to take 200 or more wickets for England in ODI cricket till now.  

The veteran has taken 201 wickets in the 137 ODI matches at an average of 32.22. He has taken eight four-wicket hauls and two fifers in this format and is the third of the England bowlers to take most wickets in ODIs. 

4. Stuart Broad – 178 wickets 

Stuart Broad made his ODI debut against Pakistan in Cardiff in 2006 and played his last ODI game against South Africa in Cape Town in 2016.  In his 10-year-long ODI career, Broad featured in 121 matches for England, taking 178 wickets at an average of 30.13. The right-arm seamer completed nine four-wicket hauls and one five-wicket haul.
