The over rate is critical for the bowling side in the Indian Premier League. Kamran’s article gives us a clearer picture of the slower overrate and the penalties associated with it.

Slow Over Rate in IPL

Over rate refers to the average number of overs bowled by the fielding team in an hour of play. In the IPL, the over rate includes the two strategic timeouts. The two will last for two minutes, each thirty seconds; IPL’s average over rate is 14.11. Therefore, the bowling side is expected to complete their 20 overs within an hour and thirty minutes, two and a half hours at most. The deadline may be delayed due to poor pitch conditions, accidents, or poor weather.

Slow Over Rate Penalty in IPL

  • First offence in a season: The skipper will be fined Rs. 12 lakhs.
  • Second in the same season: The skipper will be fined Rs. 24 lakhs, and the other ten players will be fined Rs. 6 lakhs, or 25% of the match fee that is lower.
  • Third and more in the same season: The bowler’s skipper will be fined Rs. 30 lakhs and banned from one match. The other ten players will be fined Rs. 12 lakhs or 50% of the match fee which is lower.

Recently, Mumbai Indian’s skipper Hardik Pandya was heavily penalized for the slow over rate against Punjab Kings. The bowler’s skipper broke the rules of the IPL Code of Conduct.
