Rajasthan Royals secured a nail-biting win over Punjab Kings by three wickets in the IPL 2024. Chasing a target of 148, RR managed to cross the finish line with just one ball to spare.
The match saw RR off to a promising start with Yashasvi Jaiswal and his new opening partner Tanush Kotian adding 56 runs for the first wicket. However, Liam Livingstone broke the partnership by dismissing Kotian for 24. Subsequently, Jaiswal and Sanju Samson contributed 26 runs for the second wicket before both departed in quick succession.
Kagiso Rabada further compounded RR’s woes by dismissing both Jaiswal and Samson, leaving them reeling at 89 for 3. Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel then steadied the ship with a 24-run stand before they too departed in quick succession. Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel took crucial wickets, reducing RR to 115 for 5 from 113 for 3.
However, a 21-run partnership between Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell revived RR’s hopes. Despite Sam Curran’s late heroics, dismissing Powell and Keshav Maharaj in the 19th over, Hetmyer ensured victory for RR in the final over.
Earlier in the game, RR’s disciplined bowling effort restricted PBKS to 147/8 in 20 overs.
Missing captain Shikhar Dhawan, PBKS struggled to build partnerships, with Avesh Khan and Yuzvendra Chahal leading RR’s bowling attack with two wickets each.
