5 wicket hauls is an achievement for a bowler who takes five wickets in a single innings. We will cover the athletes who have registered themselves in the record for having the most number of five wicket hauls in different formats of cricket.

Most five wicket hauls in T20 (white ball cricket)

David Wiese, the right-arm medium bowler and an all-rounder from South Africa, has achieved this feat with the white ball in T20 international format. He made his debut in 2012 for South Africa and played his first T20 match against Sri Lanka. Later, he left the South African team to play county cricket due to a kolpak deal signed with Sussex.

He debuted for Namibia in 2021 and was part of a team when Namibia registered its first win in an ICC tournament against the Netherlands. He has taken seven 5 wicket hauls in T20 cricket internationals. David has taken a total of 307 wickets in his T20 career, with a best figure of 5/19.

Most Five Wickets in ODI (white ball cricket)

Waqar Younis, the right-arm fast bowler and former captain from Pakistan, holds many records in his cricket career, such as fastest to reach and complete 400 wickets in 252 matches, most consecutive 4 wickets till 3 innings, and best figures in an innings by a captain.

Waqar took a total of thirteen 5 wicket hauls in his career, which is the maximum, and stands alone at the top of the list with an economy of 4.68. He has taken 416 wickets in total of his career span, and his best bowling figures are 7 wickets, conceding only 36 runs.

Most five wicket hauls in Test cricket (red ball cricket)

This feat is achieved by Muttiah Muralitharan, one of the legends of spin alongside Shane Warne, who were the best in their art and dominated international cricket till the end of their careers.

Muttiah Muralitharan was the Sri Lankan off-spinner who struggled a lot due to his action being called out legal. His bowling action seemed as if he chucked his arm while bowling the ball for more accuracy and spin, but later it was certified legal by the ICC, and he reigned in world cricket. Murlitharan has taken a total of 800 wickets in international cricket.

He is the only player in the world to achieve the feat of taking 800 wickets, which is the most by any bowler in the world. Now, along with that, he took a total of sixty-seven-five wicket hauls in Test cricket, and twenty-two times he grabbed the ten wicket haul in red ball cricket.

Murlitharan could have also topped the list for most 5 wicket hauls in ODI as he is in second place, though he broke all the records and registered some next to impossible records in world cricket that are still unbroken till date and not even close any active players achievements.

The 2024 season of Sri Lanka’s top domestic T20 competition, the Lanka Premier League, now have an additional rule known as ‘Power Blast’.

The Lanka Premier League added a fresh concept to boost excitement in the last overs of a game. Under the new rule, the Lanka Premier League(LPL) included two extra powerplay overs in the last few overs of each inning. Sri Lankan franchise LPL started its 5th season on 1 July 2024.

This new Lanka Premier League rule includes two “power blast overs” on the 16th and 17th overs of each inning, with a maximum of four fielders outside the 30-yard circle. This new power play will be added to the regular power play, which occurs in the first six overs of an inning.

What is Power Blast over in the Lanka Premier League 2024?

According to the Lanka Premier League, the “power blast overs” will provide “a stronger and exciting phase to the game”. Samantha Dodanwela, the LPL tournament director stated, “We decided to bring this rule in order to create more excitement to the league, which is growing year by year.” 

“This new introduction is sure to generate a lot of excitement among the fans, and the teams will need to strategize effectively to make the most of this period,” the director added. 

The 2024 season of the tournament features 20 league matches between five teams. Following the league round, the LPL event will feature three playoff games and a final. Each team will play each other twice during the league stage before the top four teams advance to the playoffs.

The first season of the league was scheduled to run from August 18 to September 10, 2018, but it was postponed several times due to administrative concerns within Sri Lanka Cricket. During the COVID-19 epidemic, SLC stated in June 2020 that the tournament would begin on August 28, 2020, with 70 overseas players expressing interest in participating. Ravin Wickramaratne, SLC’s Vice President, was formally appointed tournament director in August 2020. After being deferred due to pandemic-related limitations, the first season premiered on November 26, 2020.

Samantha Dodanwala was named the official LPL tournament director in May 2022. The third edition was originally slated for August 2022 but was postponed due to the current Sri Lankan economic crisis and the resulting 2022 Sri Lankan protests, despite the fact that the player draft had already taken place.

The Jaffna team has won three league titles, whereas the Kandy franchise has only one. The Jaffna Stallions won their first season, defeating the Galle Gladiators by 53 runs in the final. The following season, Jaffna Kings defeated Galle by 23 runs, and in 2022, they defeated Colombo Stars by two wickets to claim their third straight title.

T20 World Cup 2024: Veteran Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews expressed on his team’s challenging  T20 World Cup 2024, which will end after Sunday’s last group-stage match against the Netherlands in St Lucia. The 2014 winners gave up to South Africa on difficult ground in New York before falling to continental rivals Bangladesh in a low-scoring thriller in Dallas. Their other match against Nepal was rained out, essentially eliminating them from contention for the Super 8s with one match remaining.

Mathews stated the unexpected turn of the T20 World Cup event as follows: “I believe that first and foremost, we have let the entire nation down, and we are deeply sorry because we have let ourselves down. We didn’t anticipate this. I mean, we had a lot of hurdles, but those aren’t something to be concerned about, and it’s terrible that we didn’t go to the second round,” Mathews remarked on the eve of the Netherlands game.

“We only have one more game in the competition, and we’ll play for our honour. And we haven’t done ourselves credit, especially given how we performed the first two games. So, it’s unfortunate; we’re devastated and aching deeply within ourselves.

Sri Lanka entered the tournament on a good run of form, having defeated Afghanistan at home and Bangladesh away in bilateral series. With several of its players having played in the IPL, they had anticipated a better performance than a first-round exit.

Why Did Sri Lanka Not Win the T20 World Cup?

“That is something we regret, as I believe we didn’t fully represent our abilities in this tournament with the way we played Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh in Bangladesh. As you point out, you can’t underestimate any team going into a World Cup, but regrettably, the way we performed against those teams in the lead-up to the tournament and the way we performed when we returned here didn’t reflect well on us.” Certainly, the wicket totals were obviously different.

Mathews mentioned a few “challenges,” one of which was the constant issue of scheduling. Mathews stated he had never had to travel this much in any previous World Cup, echoing teammate Maheesh Theekshana’s earlier criticism of the schedule that saw Sri Lanka as one of just two teams—the other being the Netherlands—to play in four different places.

“As I’ve already stated several times, we are really frustrated. We have never travelled this much for a World Cup in my career, I believe. It’s about the facts, not an explanation. The Dutch team and Sri Lanka, I believe, were the only teams to play all four of the tournament’s matches in four different sites. This is the most travelled World Cup in history, which is not an excuse, as I have stated previously. However, as I already stated, neither as a nation nor as a squad were able to realise our hopes. I apologise sincerely for it.

At the beginning of the competition, Mathews, who turned 37, was unsure of his future in white-ball and stated that he would make a choice after learning the national selectors’ opinions on the team’s future. “I play every match with the mindset that it’s my last. Since everything is unpredictable, including life itself,” Mathews stated.

“So, I do my best to perform well in every match for my team. I don’t think I’ll be playing in the upcoming event or match. So, there is still some time, so there will be some concerns, but as of right now, I don’t have any plans. In the future, we only need the pickers’ opinions—not mine. As I previously stated, I play this game because I adore the sport. I play with the same passion and bond whether I’m playing for my club team or the national squad. As I have stated, I always believe that to be my final game.”
