Why Is The County Championship 2025 Paused?

The pause in the County Championship 2025 is not unexpected; it’s a feature of the modern English domestic season. The structure, largely unchanged from previous years, divides the summer into distinct windows for different competitions.

After the first eight rounds of the County Championship 2025 (April to late May/early June), the schedule shifts to accommodate the T20 Vitality Blast, One-Day Cup matches, and The Hundred in mid-summer. This pause is principally designed to:

• Maximize exposure and player availability for limited-overs tournaments, which are critical for revenue.
• Provide much-needed rest and rotation for players during an increasingly congested calendar (an ongoing player welfare concern).
• Prevent competition clashes that would dilute the public and broadcaster attention on both the red-ball and white-ball formats.

This approach, while normalizing a “red-ball window,” sometimes draws criticism for disrupting championship momentum, but it reflects the priorities and commercial realities of the domestic game.

When Will the County Championship 2025 Resume?

After pausing during June and early July, the County Championship 2025 is set to resume on July 22, 2025, with the next full round of matches. The final block of fixtures will then be played steadily through to the conclusion of the season on September 27, 2025. This scheduling allows counties to finish their red-ball campaigns with momentum and gives fans a high-stakes conclusion to the title race and promotion/relegation battles.

Nottinghamshire signed on a short-term contract to make up for Kyle Verreynne’s absence as he is away for international duty. Ishan Kishan’s Dream Debut At County Championship

Ishan Kishan came at number six and scored 87 runs off 98 balls, with 12 fours and a six. This resulted in a strike rate close to 89, marking a dream debut for Kishan. His innings were marked by fearless stroke play, which helped stabilise and boost the team’s total to overcome 450 runs.

Ishan Kishan’s dream debut eventually ended by England spinner Dom Bess, and he narrowly missed a century. However, it doesn’t overshadow the outstanding performance he gave yesterday.

Out Of The Indian Squad Since…

Before his county stint, Ishan Kishan had been out of the Indian team since December 2023, after he decided to opt out for the South Africa Test Series. Although he has played only two Tests for India with a fifty to his name, Kishan is known for his attacking skills in limited-overs cricket. He boasts an ODI average over 42 with a double century and nearly 800 T20I runs at a strike rate of 124. His recent IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad was productive, scoring 354 runs at an average of 35.40 and a strike rate above 152, including a century.

In April 2024, during a match between Essex County Cricket Club and Nottinghamshire in the county championship, a batsman from Essex used a non-compliant bat in the match. Feroze Khushi used an unfit bat in his innings which led to a deduction of 12 points for Essex County Cricket Club in the race county championship title race.

Essex County Cricket Club penalized due to Feroze Khushi’s misconduct

The independent panel of the Cricket Discipline Commission issued a penalty of twelve points to Essex County Cricket after the batter Feroze Khushi and the club admitted to using a non-compliant bat which breaches the ECB directives of 3.2 and 3.3.

These directives state that a team player shall be fairly participating in the game on and off the field without breaching the code of conduct and using the proper certified sports utilities. Umpires suspected Firoze of using an unfit and asked to change it when he was on 21 off 27 balls.

Although Essex had a 254-run victory in that match but the umpires stated that the bat used by Feroze was not lying in the specific dimension of a legal bat. According to the laws a bat’s gauge has to be within a certified limit. The width of the bat can be a maximum of 10.8cm, its depth should be limited to 6.7 cm whereas its edges can not be more than 4 cm.

Now Essex country sanctioned an appeal for dismissing this penalty and that Firoze used a legal bat by Gray Nicolas but their appeal got denied and now the club was levied with a 12-point deduction in the points table of the County Championship. Firoze Khushi was issued a two-year ban from playing cricket as well for failing the bat gauge test.

Keith Fletcher, the president of the county’s side said “Gray-Nicolls have backed us all the way. There are several different bat gauges and they say they followed the rules,” said Fletcher.

“I assume the ECB thought this was cheating and the appeal panel is trying to flex its muscles. Feroze does not believe he did anything wrong and the whole side has been penalized not just one player.” said Keith Fletcher.

The Essex County Cricket Club submitted an appeal regarding concerns of significant and material procedural misconduct that impacted on the sanction, which was supported by the ECB as well. However, despite of getting the support and raising concerns for inconsistencies with the compliance of bat gauges in line with the relevant MCC laws of cricket, their appeal was unsuccessful.
