Alex Hepburn, a former Worcestershire cricketer, has been banned from playing cricket in England and Wales for 10 years due to a previous rape conviction. Hepburn is now 28 and has not played professional cricket yet since 2017, that year he was convicted of dehumanizing women, rating them in text messages to his team-mates in a “sexual conquest competition”

On September 16, Alex Hepburn attacked a woman while she was asleep. In 2020, he tried to appeal the decision but it got failed, since the age of 21 his cricket career has been stopped. He was accused of two breaches of 3.3 directives of the ECB.

In a statement from the Cricket Regulator, they added: “Mr Hepburn failed to respond to the charge letter and related communication. As such, the CDC panel reached its decision in his absence. Mr Hepburn has not appealed the CDC panel’s decision.”

In the charge related to a criminal conviction he was banned for 10 years to be indulged in playing, coaching, or any activity that falls under the authority of the England Cricket Board, he must receive proper professional treatment for the issues. For the second charge, he was suspended for 2 years to participate in cricket tournaments.

Now Alex Hepburn’s decision not to appeal the Cricket Discipline Commission has resulted in him being ruled out of the professional cricket career. This action was a big step in cricket’s fight to uphold high standards of behavior and hold people accountable for damaging the sport’s reputation.

Alex Hepburn has played two List A matches and five T20 matches for Worcestershire between 2015 and 2017. He managed to pick 12 wickets and additionally, Hepburn has been permanently added to the sexual offender register.

Cricket Discipline Commission’s statement on Monday:

“For the first charge, relating to his criminal conviction, Mr. Hepburn has been suspended from playing cricket for 10 years, commencing on 30 October 2021. Further, before he is permitted to play, coach, or undertake any cricket-related activity that falls within the authority of the ECB in the future, he is required to undergo appropriate professional treatment for the issues that led to his criminal conviction and to undertake appropriate training and education courses,”

“For the second charge, concerning his participation in an offensive WhatsApp group, Mr. Hepburn has been suspended from playing for a period of two years which is deemed served, having commenced on 30 October 2021,” it further added.

The independent panel of the Cricket Discipline Commission issued a penalty of twelve points to Essex County Cricket after the batter Feroze Khushi and the club admitted to using a non-compliant bat which breaches the ECB directives of 3.2 and 3.3.

These directives state that a team player shall be fairly participating in the game on and off the field without breaching the code of conduct and using the proper certified sports utilities. Umpires suspected Firoze of using an unfit and asked to change it when he was on 21 off 27 balls.

Although Essex had a 254-run victory in that match but the umpires stated that the bat used by Feroze was not lying in the specific dimension of a legal bat. According to the laws a bat’s gauge has to be within a certified limit. The width of the bat can be a maximum of 10.8cm, its depth should be limited to 6.7 cm whereas its edges can not be more than 4 cm.

Now Essex country sanctioned an appeal for dismissing this penalty and that Firoze used a legal bat by Gray Nicolas but their appeal got denied and now the club was levied with a 12-point deduction in the points table of the County Championship. Firoze Khushi was issued a two-year ban from playing cricket as well for failing the bat gauge test.

Keith Fletcher, the president of the county’s side said “Gray-Nicolls have backed us all the way. There are several different bat gauges and they say they followed the rules,” said Fletcher.

“I assume the ECB thought this was cheating and the appeal panel is trying to flex its muscles. Feroze does not believe he did anything wrong and the whole side has been penalized not just one player.” said Keith Fletcher.

The Essex County Cricket Club submitted an appeal regarding concerns of significant and material procedural misconduct that impacted on the sanction, which was supported by the ECB as well. However, despite of getting the support and raising concerns for inconsistencies with the compliance of bat gauges in line with the relevant MCC laws of cricket, their appeal was unsuccessful.

This change is part of England’s new leadership plan.

Brendon McCullum’s popular ‘Bazball’ approach will now influence the England cricket team in the white-batt formats of the game. Earlier, the busy international schedule of the England cricket team had made it tough for one person to handle both the red-ball format and the white-ball format of the game, especially with overlapping games.

However, with the new changes in the cricketing calendar, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and McCullum feel that managing the team in all formats is now possible.

Brendon McCullum’s contract has also been extended until 2027.

“The idea of a unified coaching structure, especially with the schedule easing next year, made perfect sense,” McCullum said. “I’m energized by the prospect of guiding both teams and am grateful for the support from the ECB and my family as I take on these added responsibilities.”

For the unversed, England’s white-ball coach Matthew Mott stepped down as England’s white-ball coach on July 30 after overseeing the team’s disappointing performances in the ODI and T20 World Cup titles.

“The talent within English cricket is immense, and I’m looking forward to helping these players reach their full potential,” McCullum said. “My goal is to create an environment where everyone can thrive and where we can continue to compete at the highest level across all formats.”

Meanwhile, England’s red-ball Ben Stokes told Sky Sports when asked to share his thoughts on McCullum’s new role said: “I think it’s great for English cricket.” He added: “What Baz (Brendon McCullum) has given to this team and the individuals in the team and the confidence it has instilled in myself and the team is brilliant.”

“I am really looking forward to the guys who are involved in the white-ball team to experience that as well. He is a fantastic human being and a great coach. I am really excited for the white-ball side to be able to go forward with Baz and Jos (Buttler) in front. He (McCullum) obviously has taken this challenge on board because he feels like he can make a difference and he can help and that’s something you want in your coach.”

“You don’t want a coach who’s just gonna come in and let things just play out and whatever will be.. will be…but Baz is a very determined person to come in and make an influence wherever he goes in the world as a coach. I think it’s unbelievable for English cricket that Brendon’s gonna be coaching both teams,” Stokes concluded.

As the defending champions, England has their sights set on retaining the trophy they clinched in the previous edition, where they triumphed over New Zealand in a nail-biting final.

The ICC World Cup 2023 is scheduled to kick off on October 5, with India playing host to this cricketing extravaganza. This edition will witness a fierce competition among ten formidable teams, including England, India, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, the Netherlands, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.

England’s campaign in the ICC World Cup 2023 is set to be an action-packed journey, featuring a total of nine league stage matches. Each team will face off against the others once before the semi-finals. England’s league stage will culminate with a clash against Pakistan on November 11.

While England has claimed the ODI World Cup title only once before, in the 2019 edition, they have been perennial finalists and consistently ranked among the strongest contenders in the tournament. With an impressive record and a squad brimming with talent, England aims to add another trophy to their collection.

England has already unveiled their preliminary squad for the World Cup, with the dynamic Jos Buttler leading the team. Buttler, who has been a pivotal player for England, will not only captain the side but also play a crucial role in guiding the team’s fortunes.

In a significant development, Ben Stokes has come out of his ODI retirement and will don the England jersey once again for the World Cup campaign. Stokes, known for his remarkable all-round abilities, adds depth and experience to the team.

The England squad also features key players like Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, and Jason Roy, who bring their own unique strengths to the team’s lineup. However, it’s worth noting that emerging talent Harry Brook, despite his impressive performances, did not secure a spot in the preliminary squad.

As the countdown to the ICC World Cup 2023 begins, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await England’s journey in their quest for glory. With a strong squad and a rich cricketing history, England promises to be a formidable force in the tournament.
