The masterful leg-spinner has confirmed his return to Northamptonshire for the 2026 season, marking his third consecutive summer with the English county side.

And yes, this comeback is not just about taking wickets; it’s also about bringing some serious spin wisdom to the young guns hungry for guidance.

Yuzvendra Chahal’s Stint With Northamptonshire

Yuzvendra Chahal’s stint with Northamptonshire will kick off in the second half of the 2026 season, where he’ll be seen unleashing his magic both in the County Championship and the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

The man who’s already taken 44 first-class wickets and seven List A wickets at Wantage Road is upping his game this time around, adding mentorship to his role, helping nurture promising spinners like Nirvan Ramesh and Stuart van der Merwe. Talk about carrying the torch while still being a wicket-taking machine!

Northamptonshire head coach Darren Lehmann is absolutely buzzing about Yuzvendra Chahal’s return. He called Yuzi “a magnificent asset to the squad,” bringing loads of class, experience, and spin wizardry to the team. Lehmann isn’t just excited about Chahal’s impact on the pitch; he’s equally pumped about the mentorship Chahal provides to the up-and-coming talent. That experience? Priceless.

Now, Yuzvendra Chahal’s 2025 at Northants was cut short due to some personal reasons, but his love for the club and the county circuit never faded. “I’m so excited to be back,” Chahal said, and it shows. At 35, there’s still plenty of cricket left in the tank for this spinner who has been a key bowler for India in white-ball cricket with over 200 wickets under his belt.

That’s your fast take on Chahal’s much-anticipated comeback, a story of cricket, passion, and the joy of mentoring the next generation. Stay tuned; 2026 is going to be spinner heaven at Wantage Road!

The game attracted a lively attendance of 15,640 spectators, and the big star on the day was Grace Harris, who took the center stage with a scorching 89 not out from just 42 balls.

Grace Harris vs Meg Lanning: A Battle of Australian Titans

In a nail-biting clash between two of Australia’s top hitters, Grace Harris came out on top. Signed ahead of Meg Lanning in the winter, Harris vindicated Spirit’s move by opening up on the Invincibles’ bowling lineup with a brutal onslaught.

Her explosive innings was full of power and precision, underpinning Spirit’s score of 176 for 3, the second-largest score in Women’s Hundred history.

Lanning, however, put up a good fight with 85 from 51 balls, bringing Oval Invincibles back into the chase before being dismissed. Lack of support at the other end, however, meant her fight came to an end in vain.

Cordelia Griffith and Harris Power Spirit’s Batting Surge

Grace Harris was the star of the show, but she had competent support from Cordelia Griffith, who smashed a quick 50 off 29 deliveries. The two of them propelled London Spirit to a commanding total that established the tone of the match.

“There were good comms from the openers — the wicket was nice, just a bit of swing in the air,” said Grace Harris. “I’m happy to bat anywhere, but it’s always good to finish strong.”

LS vs OI: Invincibles Falter Despite Lanning’s Brilliance

Even with Meg Lanning’s imposing innings, Oval Invincibles were not able to establish partnerships consistently. Brief contributions from Alice Capsey and Marizanne Kapp gave hope, but they weren’t able to compete with Spirit’s batting depth.

Alternatively, the absence of a consistent secondary scorer was conspicuous in contrast to the Griffith-Harris partnership.

Bowling Highlights: Farrant Ends Drought, Ryana Shines

For the Invincibles, Ryana Macdonald-Gay was the most frugal and reliable bowler, while Tash Farrant marked a personal milestone by claiming her first wicket in the competition after 1,450 days, after sitting out due to an injury layoff.

Meerkat Match Hero: Grace Harris

Harris’ destructive inning got her the Meerkat Match Hero award, and she opined on the significance of a good start in the high-intensity format of The Hundred.

“Always want to get the win up first, particularly against cross-town rivals,” said Harris. “It’s always nice to get the wood on them early in the season.”

Heather Knight Absence, No Problem for Spirit

London Spirit demonstrated cohesion and firepower despite their 2024 title-winning captain Heather Knight’s absence. Their impressive team performance, spearheaded by Grace Harris, sets them up well for their efforts to hold onto their title.

Sciver-Brunt’s Dominance Fuels Mumbai’s Ascent

Nat Sciver-Brunt gave a phenomenal all-around display, initially claiming 3 wickets for 18 runs and then complementing it with an unbeaten 75 off 44 balls to lead Mumbai to victory.

Having held UP Warriorz to a sub-par score of 142/9, Mumbai comfortably chased down the score, reaching 143/2 off 16.4 overs.

Warriorz’s Blazing Start Not Enough

The Warriors started well, courtesy of Grace Harris’ 45 off 29 balls and Vrinda Dinesh’s unflappable 33 off 30 balls. The two added a good 79-run stand for the second wicket, but all their good work was undone as Warriorz dramatically collapsed in the middle overs.

From a comfortable 81/1, they lost 8 wickets for a mere 54 runs, failing to get close to a competitive score.

Sciver-Brunt’s Blazing Innings

Pursuing a small target, Mumbai was struggling at 6/1, but Sciver-Brunt came to the crease to steady the innings. Even as Hayley Matthews struggled in the early stages, Sciver-Brunt asserted herself.

She sent the Warriorz bowlers into tatters with a string of boundaries. She reached her half-century in 29 balls, including a hat-trick of fours against Chinelle Henry. Her 13 boundaries during a 44-ball innings eased Mumbai to their third victory of the season.

Matthews’ Steady Support

While Sciver-Brunt ruled the show with the bat, Matthews played a stabilizing role at the other end. Although dropped at the beginning of her innings, Matthews worked herself into her stride, adding a vital 59 off 50 balls.

The two together shared an unbeaten 133-run partnership for the second wicket, ensuring that Mumbai reached the target quite comfortably.

Harris’ Promotion Pays Off for Warriorz

UP Warriorz brought in a tactical shift by elevating Grace Harris to bat at the top of the innings, and it proved to be a good move as she was in fine touch from the word go.

Harris took the game to the Mumbai bowlers, especially having a field day against Shabnim Ismail and Hayley Matthews, driving boundaries with ease. Vrinda played the perfect second fiddle, playing elegant drives and finding boundaries with ease.

Middle-Overs Collapse

Despite the encouraging beginning, the Warriorz were thwarted by the same old problem: their weakness in the middle overs. Once they had 81/1, the Warriorz folded at 123/7 in 30 runs. The key wickets were lost in the middle overs, with Amelia Kerr removing Harris in the 10th over.

Sanskriti Gupta then changed the complexion of the game by knocking over Vrinda and Tahlia McGrath in quick succession in the 11th over. With their momentum fully halted, the Warriorz never regained their footing.

Struggles in the Middle Overs

The Warriorz have struggled throughout the middle part of their innings in the WPL. They have lost the most wickets (24) in overs 7 to 16 in the tournament and have also been the slowest to score (6.72) in this period. Despite the initial spark by Harris and Vrinda, the absence of a strong middle-order base resulted in another lackluster collapse.

Sciver-Brunt’s Pioneering Role in the WPL

With 252 runs in four matches, Sciver-Brunt has emerged as the leading run-scorer in this year’s WPL, surpassing Ellyse Perry’s tally of 235. Her all-around dominance was the highlight of the match, and she continues to lead Mumbai’s charge towards the top of the table.

While Mumbai Indians have been in their prime, UP Warriorz will have to sort out their middle-order collapse and adopt a more stable game if they are going to challenge for the championship. Mumbai’s thumping victory, led by the brilliance of Sciver-Brunt, puts them in a strong position in the WPL points table.

86 (91) vs West Indies, 5th ODI, 2011 (Port of Spain)

This knock showed Rohit’s capacity to save India from a terrible situation on his own alone. India, needing to score 226 to win, collapsed to a dismal 92/6. Enter Rohit, who put in a calm but forceful innings. He regularly set limits while forming crucial connections with Praveen Kumar and Harbhajan Singh. With 22 balls remaining, he led India to an exciting victory with an unbeaten 86 that included five fours and two sixes.

In a thrilling encounter, Sunrisers Hyderabad clinched victory against Rajasthan Royals to secure their spot in the IPL 2024 final. The match witnessed exemplary bowling performances from Shahbaz Ahmed and Abhishek Sharma, which proved instrumental in Sunrisers’ triumph.

Setting the Stage

Rajasthan Royals won the toss and elected to chase, aiming to exploit the favorable conditions. However, Sunrisers Hyderabad had other plans, capitalizing on the dry pitch and ball to orchestrate a memorable victory.

Spin Wizardry by Shahbaz Ahmed

Shahbaz Ahmed, initially brought in to bolster the batting lineup, showcased his versatility by delivering a stellar bowling performance. Despite being the underdog in the matchup, Shahbaz spun the ball expertly, dismantling Rajasthan’s top order and turning the tide in Sunrisers’ favour.

Abhishek Sharma’s Impact

Abhishek Sharma, underutilized throughout the campaign, seized the opportunity to shine on the big stage. His calculated bowling, coupled with Shahbaz’s brilliance, created significant pressure on the Rajasthan batsmen, resulting in crucial breakthroughs for Sunrisers.

Klaasen’s Game-changing Innings

Heinrich Klaasen’s batting prowess played a pivotal role in Sunrisers’ victory. With astute shot selection and impeccable timing, Klaasen navigated the tricky Chennai pitch, guiding his team to a competitive total and ensuring a fighting chance with the ball.

Rajasthan’s Valiant Effort

Despite a valiant effort by Rajasthan Royals, highlighted by Trent Boult’s early breakthroughs and Avesh Khan’s impeccable yorkers, they fell short in the face of Sunrisers’ determined bowling attack. The absence of key players like Jos Buttler and Shimron Hetmyer further compounded their batting woes.

Sunrisers’ Final Flourish

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s triumph was a testament to their resilience and adaptability. Overcoming challenges with their weaker suit, they showcased their championship credentials and emerged as a formidable contender for the IPL 2024 title.

As they gear up to face Kolkata Knight Riders in the final showdown, Sunrisers Hyderabad will undoubtedly pose a serious threat, backed by their stellar performances and unwavering determination throughout the tournament.

The process to appoint the head coach of India’s men’s cricket team is set to commence next week, confirmed Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Shah mentioned that the current head coach, Rahul Dravid, can reapply for the position if he wishes to extend his tenure. “We will call for applications in the next few days. Rahul Dravid’s tenure is coming to an end in June. If he wants to reapply, he can,” Shah stated during an interaction at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. He added that decisions regarding other coaching staff positions, such as batting, bowling, and fielding coaches, will be made after consultation with the new head coach.

Dravid received a short-term extension until the T20 World Cup after his two-year contract expired following India’s loss in the final of the ODI World Cup last November. Shah also confirmed that the new head coach will be offered the opportunity to lead the team until the ODI World Cup in 2027.

Regarding the possibility of appointing a foreign coach, Shah left the issue open-ended, suggesting that the board may not consider different coaches for different formats, a system adopted by other cricket boards.

“We are looking for a long-term coach for three years. Whether the new coach will be Indian or foreign will be decided by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). There are many all-format players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant, among others. Moreover, such a situation is unprecedented in India,” Shah stated.

The three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will finalize the appointment of a national selector, with interviews already underway.

Additionally, Shah emphasized the importance of red-ball cricket, leaving it to individual state associations to decide whether to increase payments to domestic players. He also revealed that Hardik Pandya, who received an A grade in Central Contracts, has agreed to participate in domestic white-ball cricket.

Shah announced that the structure of the domestic cricket league will be unveiled soon, and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru’s High-Performance Centre will open in August.

Regarding the Impact Player rule introduced in the 2023 IPL, Shah stated, “The Impact Player rule was introduced as a test case. It provides additional playing opportunities to two more Indian players in every match.” He added that consultations with franchise captains, players, franchises, and broadcasters will determine the rule’s future.

Addressing speculation about replacing Greg Barclay as the International Cricket Council (ICC) chair later this year, Shah said, “Let there be speculation. Let me be here in the BCCI. Am I not doing a good job as BCCI secretary?” he concluded.
