Imam-ul-Haq has stepped in for Ruturaj Gaikwad at Yorkshire for the remainder of the 2025 County Championship season, bringing renewed hope and excitement to the team. This change came after Gaikwad, the Chennai Super Kings captain, unexpectedly pulled out of his deal with the English county side due to personal reasons just days before his anticipated debut.
Why Did Ruturaj Gaikwad Leave?
Yorkshire had been eagerly waiting for Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s arrival, expecting him to add valuable firepower to their batting lineup. Unfortunately, his last-minute withdrawal left the club in a tricky position, especially with important matches coming up, including a clash against Surrey at Scarborough. Yorkshire’s head coach, Anthony McGrath, admitted the disappointment but chose not to disclose details about Gaikwad’s decision, only saying, “We hope that everything’s okay”.
To fill the gap quickly, Yorkshire moved fast and signed Pakistan’s experienced opener Imam-ul-Haq as the overseas player for the rest of the English domestic season. Imam is not new to county cricket, having played for Somerset in 2022. His familiarity with English conditions and impressive cricketing record make him an ideal fit for Yorkshire right now.
Imam-ul-Haq Comes To The Rescue
At 28 years old, Imam-ul-Haq carries a solid first-class batting average of around 43 and has earned respect on the international stage with multiple centuries in Test and ODI cricket. He is also the nephew of legendary former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, which adds to the excitement around his arrival.
Earlier this year, Imam played a key role in leading Pakistan Television to victory in the prestigious President’s Cup, Pakistan’s top domestic first-class tournament. This fresh success has boosted his confidence, and Yorkshire will be banking on him to strengthen their batting line-up as the season moves into a crucial phase.
Gavin Hamilton On The Decision
Gavin Hamilton, Yorkshire’s general manager of cricket, welcomed Imam’s signing warmly. He said, “We’re delighted that Imam has joined us and that he will be available immediately. Whilst naturally disappointed that Ruturaj couldn’t join up with the squad, in Imam, we have an exceptional player of proven international quality.” Hamilton also praised Imam’s quick arrival and believes his experience with English domestic cricket will help Yorkshire during this important stretch of matches.
Yorkshire currently sit eighth in Division One with a mixed record, winning just two out of nine matches and losing four. The team is under pressure to climb the standings, and Imam’s addition comes at a vital time. He will feature not only in the remaining County Championship games but also in the Metro Bank One Day Cup fixtures. His presence is expected to bolster Yorkshire’s chances of finishing the season strongly.
