The first edition of the Delhi Premier League T20 has delivered excitement and drama to cricket fans in recent days. However, the match between the South Delhi Superstarz and the North Delhi Strikers turned into a record-breaking run-fest. Ayush Badoni and Priyansh Arya were the stars of the show, setting new records with their explosive performance. The pair put together an incredible partnership of 286 runs, making it the highest partnership ever in T20 cricket history. They collectively smashed 29 sixes, contributing to a team total of 31 sixes— the most ever hit in a single T20 innings. Badoni led the charge, hitting 19 sixes and surpassing the previous record set by West Indies legend Chris Gayle.

Record-Breaking Achievements

The duo of Badoni and Arya didn’t just stop there; they broke multiple T20 cricket records during their match against the North Delhi Strikers.

Highest Partnership in T20s:

The 286-run partnership between Priyansh Arya and Ayush Badoni is now the highest ever recorded in T20 cricket.

Most Sixes in One T20 Innings:

Ayush Badoni eclipsed Chris Gayle’s long-standing record by hitting 19 sixes in an innings. Gayle had previously set the record with 18 sixes during an unbeaten 146-run knock in the 2017 Bangladesh Premier League.

Most Sixes Hit by a Batter in an Over:

Priyansh Arya matched India’s Yuvraj Singh’s record by hitting 6 sixes in a single over, becoming only the second Indian to achieve this feat. Internationally, Kieron Pollard and Nicholas Pooran have also hit 6 sixes in an over.

Most Sixes Hit in a Single T20 Match:

The South Delhi Superstarz team set a new record with 31 sixes, surpassing the previous record of 26 sixes held by Nepal.

Second-Highest Total in T20 Cricket History:

With a score of 308/5, South Delhi Superstarz narrowly missed the highest team total in T20 cricket. They took the second spot, just behind Nepal’s 314/3 against Mongolia in the 2023 Asian Games.

In the high-pressure environment of the finals, some players have risen to the occasion with truly unforgettable performances. From match-winning centuries to exceptional bowling spells, these feats have cemented their names in cricketing folklore and inspired generations of aspiring players. This blog delves into some of the most iconic performances in the Ranji Trophy finals, showcasing the talent, tenacity, and sheer brilliance displayed by these cricketers.

The Triple Century of Vijay Hazare (1946–1947)

Vijay Hazare delivered an innings of epic proportions in the 1946–47 Ranji Trophy final between Holkar and Bombay, leaving a lasting impression on Indian cricket. Hazare scored 316 runs while batting for Bombay, an incredible triple century in an era when big scores like that were uncommon. In addition to giving Bombay a commanding lead, his innings demonstrated his extraordinary batting ability and incredible poise under duress. As one of the most memorable innings in Ranji Trophy history, Hazare’s triple century has earned him the right to be regarded as one of the most incredible batters in Indian history.

Lala Amarnath’s Round-the-Clock Heroics (1947–48)

Following Vijay Hazare’s monumental feat, another all-rounder etched his name in Ranji Trophy folklore. In the 1947–48 final, Lala Amarnath led North Zone to victory over Western India with a truly well-rounded performance. Amarnath first laid the foundation with a crucial century in the first innings. He then turned the tide with his bowling, taking a magnificent five-wicket haul in the second innings (mention runs conceded if available). This display of grit and versatility cemented Amarnath’s reputation as a true all-rounder and continues to inspire players in the Ranji Trophy.

The Twin Centuries of Sunil Gavaskar (1976–1977)

One of the most respected batters in Indian cricket, Sunil Gavaskar, made Ranji Trophy history in the 1976–77 final against Karnataka with a fantastic batting display. Gavaskar, who was playing for Bombay, had an incredible game, hitting hundreds in each of the game’s two innings. In addition to laying the groundwork for Bombay’s triumph, his twin centuries, he demonstrated his unmatched capacity to crush opposing attacks with flawless technique and steadfast focus. In the Ranji Trophy finals, Gavaskar’s masterclass continues to set the standard for batting prowess, evidence of his legendary standing in Indian cricket.

Chandu Borde’s Victorious Performance in the 1967–1968 Match

Maharashtra’s victory over Mumbai in the 1967–68 Ranji Trophy final was primarily attributed to Chandu Borde’s outstanding all-around performance. When batting first, Borde showed off his class with a tenacious century that helped Maharashtra reach a respectable total. But his magnificent bowling performance in the second innings ensured his team’s victory. In a captivating display of spin bowling, Borde took key wickets to disrupt Mumbai’s batting order and give Maharashtra the win. His game-winning effort demonstrated his adaptability and was crucial to Maharashtra’s victory in the Ranji Trophy.

The Double Centuries of Wasim Jaffer (2008-09)

Wasim Jaffer’s outstanding performance in the 2008–09 Ranji Trophy final demonstrated his unmatched batting ability. Jaffer’s two double-hundreds during Mumbai’s match against Uttar Pradesh showed he could control the opposition with style and accuracy. In addition to scoring a significant amount of runs throughout his lengthy innings, he destroyed any chance of a comeback by demoralizing Uttar Pradesh’s bowling attack. Jaffer’s outstanding effort solidified his status as one of the top run-scorers in the Ranji Trophy and contributed significantly to Mumbai’s victory. Cricket fans still remember his outstanding batting display, attesting to his class and long-lasting influence on Indian domestic cricket.

Conclusion

Ajit Agarkar’s selection committee has been tasked with making suggestions on implementing this idea. While an immediate announcement is unlikely, the national selection committee has discussed the proposal aimed at ensuring domestic players not participating in the IPL do not feel deprived.

Different plans are under consideration, but there is a consensus within the BCCI that the fees for domestic cricketers should at least be doubled. One line of thinking suggests domestic players should earn between INR 75 lakh to INR 1 crore annually if they play 10 Ranji Trophy games.

Currently, the BCCI pays INR 60,000 per day to players who have played more than 40 Ranji games, with lower amounts for fewer games. On this scale, a senior cricketer could earn up to INR 25 lakh if their side reaches the final.

The plan aims to encourage domestic players to participate in the Ranji Trophy, as some avoided playing red-ball cricket last season to avoid injury risks and stay fit for the IPL. The idea aligns with the BCCI’s target of promoting red-ball cricket, following secretary Jay Shah’s announcement of higher match fees for Test matches.

Sunil Gavaskar had welcomed Shah’s announcement and suggested doubling or tripling Ranji Trophy fees, stating, “If the fees of playing a Ranji Trophy match are a good fee, there will be fewer people pulling out for various reasons.”

The Freedom were expected to bring in some Australian flavor after the appointment of Ricky Ponting as their head coach last month. The new-look side will also feature New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra as Freedom made sweeping changes. Marco Jansen and Akeal Hossein are the only foreign recruitments retained ahead of the second season.

Smith, 34, played Australia’s last T20I game against New Zealand in February but admitted uncertainty about the selectors’ plans regarding his T20 World Cup spot. While Smith’s T20I stocks may be declining, Freedom are certain to leverage his tactical nous and leadership abilities, considering former captain Moises Henriques’ absence from the retainee list.

Freedom will hope for Head to continue his purple patch that began with a blistering hundred against India in the World Cup final. The 31-year-old has set the IPL ablaze with his pyrotechnics, including a sensational 39-ball hundred against RCB last week. Maxwell’s lean patch puts him on the opposite end of the spectrum in the IPL, leading him to drop himself from the XI. A white-ball certainty for Australia, Maxwell has already embarked on a 4-month T20 voyage that will culminate with his stint at The Hundred in August.

Freedom boasts a robust domestic roster with the retentions of former Pakistan international Mukhtar Ahmed, Andries Gous, Justin Dill, former USA captain Saurabh Netravalkar, Akhilesh Bodugum, and Obus Pienaar. They further bolstered their squad by drafting Lahiru Milantha, Ian Holland, Yasir Mohammad, and former Sri Lanka left-arm spinner Amila Aponso in the domestic draft.

“We warmly welcome everyone to the Washington Freedom family and are honored to be associated with them. It is a matter of great pride that they have decided to be part of the MLC. Collectively, all MLC teams will work hard to have the best product for our fans,” said Sanjay Govil, the owner of Washington Freedom.

Asha Shobana Joy’s stellar performance in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), where she emerged as the joint second-highest wicket-taker for champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru with 12 scalps, paved the way for her selection in the national squad. This masterful display resonated as the cornerstone of Tamil Nadu Cricket Association XI’s (TNCA XI) commanding dominance, buoyed further by impactful contributions from the tenacious pacer Ajay K. Krishnan, crafty left-arm spinner M. Siddharth, and wily off-spinner Shahrukh Khan, each making their presence felt with dual scalps. A synergistic symphony of collective brilliance systematically shackled Bengal, leaving them with a tally of 193 runs as the curtains lifted on the tournament’s inaugural day at the illustrious India Cement Company ground.

On the canvas of this gripping encounter, Bengal’s rising 19-year-old prodigy Shashank Singh emerged as a beacon of promise, casting a spotlight on his remarkable fifty in the initial session. Nonetheless, the tide shifted as skipper Shahrukh Khan’s tactical acumen took center stage. An astute decision to step onto the bowling crease saw Khan expertly dismantle the fifth-wicket partnership that was blossoming between Shashank and the left-handed maestro Deepak Kumar Mahato. The calculated move bore fruit, culminating in Shashank’s dismissal after a noteworthy 68-run spectacle. Khan’s wizardry nearly conjured yet another wicket in the very next over, as a catch slipped through the grasps in the slip cordon. The scales continued to tilt in favor of TNCA XI, with Subramanyan’s entry into the bowling fray during the 49th over marking a pivotal juncture that expedited Bengal’s innings wrap-up.

Nair, a seasoned right-handed batter, expressed his gratitude to KSCA through an Instagram post, acknowledging the crucial role the association played in shaping his cricketing journey.

With an impressive First-class record of nearly 6,000 runs in 85 matches at an average of 48.94, including 15 centuries and 27 fifties, Nair’s career has had remarkable highs, notably his triple century in his third Test match. As he transitions to VCA, cricket enthusiasts anticipate his continued contributions to the sport.

Nair made a resounding entry into Test cricket in 2016, debuting against England and promptly recording a triple century in only his third Test match. His unbeaten 303 in Chennai positioned him as the second Indian cricketer, after Virender Sehwag, to achieve this feat in Test cricket. Although his outstanding performance earned him a spot in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a subsequent phase of less impressive showings led to his omission from the national side. His most recent appearance for India was in the 2017 Dharamsala Test against Australia.

The Australian pace sensation’s spell of just 13 balls yielded three vital wickets, setting the stage for an enthralling encounter. New Zealand A faced a collapse of 5 for 16 either side of lunch, largely due to Buckingham’s prowess, before their innings concluded at 147 runs. Legspinner Mitchell Swepson contributed with three wickets to wrap up the tail, leaving Australia A in a favorable position.

Buckingham’s success lies in his dedication to consistency and mental strength, as he believes in winning the psychological battle against batsmen. Despite not possessing express pace, his patient approach paid dividends. This marked Buckingham’s 11th first-class appearance, with two already under the Australia A banner and a non-first-class outing for a Cricket Australia XI.

Caleb Jewell’s noteworthy half-century in response to Buckingham’s heroics added to the excitement. Meanwhile, Jacob Duffy made his presence felt with key dismissals for New Zealand A. Buckingham’s standout performance underscores his promising future in cricket, and he expressed gratitude for the opportunities provided early in his career, acknowledging the significance of facing top-tier opposition at a young age.
