Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: West Indies made a brilliant comeback after their loss to South Africa. Hayley Matthews’ side defeated Scotland by 6 wickets in Dubai on Sunday.

West Indies opened their account in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating Scotland by six wickets at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday (October 6). Hayley Matthews & Co. got off to a very bad start to their campaign when Laura Wolvaardt’s South Africa handed them a massive 10-wicket win. But they continued to dominate the Scots.

West Indies will look to keep the momentum going when they take on Nigar Sultana Joti’s Bangladesh on September 10. Katherine Bryce’s Scotland, on the other hand, will be disappointed with their performance against the 2016 champions, who gave Bangladesh a tough fight in the opening match of the tournament.

Afy Fletcher keeps Scotland in check

After electing to bat first, the Scots lost both their openers, Saskia Horley and Sarah Bryce, in quick succession. Katherine and Alyssa Lister, Sarah’s sister, put on a crucial 46-run stand for the third wicket.

Katherine made 25 while Lister made 26 before both batters were dismissed by spinner Afy Fletcher, who also dismissed Priyanaz Chatterjee and finished with figures of 4-0-22-3.

Lorna Jack and Darcie Carter batted brilliantly to help Scotland post 99 for eight. Chinelle Henry bowled superbly to take the wicket of Sarah Bryce and bowled at an economy rate of 2.50. Skipper Matthews and Karishma Ramharack picked up a wicket each.

West Indies dictate terms

The Caribbean side showed their intent right from the start. Although they lost the wickets of Matthews and Stafanie Taylor in the powerplay, they scored 46 runs to ensure that Scotland could not make a comeback in the match. Qiana Joseph attacked on all cylinders, scoring 31 runs off 18 balls with the help of three fours and a six.

Deandra Dottin faltered against the Proteas, but her innings of 28 runs off 15 balls would have given her a lot of confidence. After a brilliant performance with the ball, Henry also did well with the bat and scored an unbeaten 18 runs off 10 balls. Oliva Bell took two wickets for Scotland, but her efforts went in vain.
