The Indian cricket team, led by Rohit Sharma, defeated South Africa by seven runs in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 final at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on Saturday, June 29, and lifted the prestigious ICC trophy after a gap of 11-long-years. The last ICC trophy India won before last night was in 2013 – Champions Trophy. Their previous World Cup win came in India during the ODI edition of the World Cup in 2011.

Talking about the iconic T20 World Cup 2024 win, the Indian cricket team elected to bat first after winning the toss. The Men in Blue made a comeback from a poor start to put up 176 runs on the scoreboard, all thanks to Virat Kohli’s innings.

Virat Kohli, who was going through a tough time with the bat, stood out for his team. He top-scored with the bat with 76 off 59 balls, smashing six fours and two sixes. He brought the much-needed momentum back to the game after India had lost Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant in quick successions.

Axar Patel, who was promoted up in the batting order, played a quick-fire knock of 47 runs off 31, while Shivam Dube also contributed with a crucial innings of 27 runs off 16 balls, smashing a few stunning boundaries.

While chasing, South Africa looked all set to create history, after having reached 151-4 after 16 overs. However, lethal bowling from Indian bowlers Jasprit Bumrah (2-18), Hardik Pandya (3-20), and Arshdeep Singh (2-20) turned the tables for the team.

It was a night to remember, and on the expected lines, everyone – from the captain, coaches, and players to the millions of fans, everyone was emotional after India’s stunning win. Suryakumar Yadav walked out to bat after Indian captain Rohit Sharma and keeper-batter Rishabh Pant had departed early. SKY formed a brilliant partnership with all-rounder Hardik Pandya and together they took the Indian cricket team to 181 runs in 20 overs.

Thanks to SKY’s knock, the Indian cricket team posted a target that was more than enough to defend as the Afghanistan batters never got close.

In the process, Suryakumar Yadav equaled Virat Kohli’s world record. Yes, SKY was awarded the Player of the Match for his brilliant knock. This was his 15th award in the T20I format. This record helped SKY match the world record of Virat Kohli. Both of them have now won 15 awards apiece.

However, the difference in both the records is of time. Surya achieved this feat faster than Kohli. SKY took just 61 innings to achieve this milestone, which is nearly half the innings of Virat Kohli. King took 113 innings to achieve this feat.

Speaking to the broadcasters during the innings break, Suryakumar Yadav talked about his knock and said: “That’s what I have practiced, I enjoy batting from overs 7-15 because that’s the most difficult phase where the opposition bowlers look to control things. I like to take charge in that phase, I enjoy it.”

Following Rohit Sharma’s dismissal, Rishabh Pant and Virat Kohli added 43 runs for the second wicket to bring the momentum back for the Indian side before Rashid Khan‘s twin strikes left team India reeling at 62 runs for 3. Talking about the pressure after Kohli’s dismissal, Surya said:

“I started chewing my gum harder when he (Kohli) got out. I just backed my game and my instincts.”

He added: “I have played a lot of cricket with him (Rohit Sharma) and now under him, he understands my game. He knows my game, so he sits back and enjoys it.”

Meanwhile, in the ongoing tournament, Suryakumar Yadav has overshadowed Virat Kohli with his performances. SKY has amassed 112 runs at an average of just over 37, in four innings, on the other hand, Kohli has scored 29 runs from four innings at an average of just over seven.

Not just this, SKY is also the only Indian batter to go past the 50-run mark and he has managed to do it twice.

The Men in Blue will be playing their next match against Bangladesh on June 22.

West Indies’ star batter Nicholas Pooran scripted history by scoring 36 runs in just one over during the T20 World Cup 2024 Group Group C match against Afghanistan at the Daren Sammy Stadium in Gros Islet.

Nicholas Pooran impressed one and all with his stunning batting display as he smashed the Afghan bowlers to all the corners of the ground and powered his side to a 104-run win.

Notably, Pooran achieved this historic feat with the help of five wides, four leg byes, and a no-ball bowled by Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai in the fourth over of the Windies’ innings.

Afganistan’s Omarzai started his over with a full and wide delivery, which Pooran smashed for a six over the third man. In the next ball, Omarzai overstepped and it was hit for a boundary. Things kept getting bad to worse for Omarzai as his next ball went for five wides.

Yes, you read that right. It was an attempted bouncer that flew over the keeper’s head. The free hit stayed, making it more difficult for Omarzai, however, Nicholas Poora failed to make the best of it.

Luck was truly against the Afghans as the third legitimate delivery of the over clipped Pooran’s pads and went for four leg byes, beating the keeper. Pooran smashed a four and two sixes off the remaining three balls of the over to etch his name on the history books.
