The former white ball captain of Sri Lanka was supposed to play a three-day match for his cricket club, Sinhalese Sports Club against Moors Sports Club. He finished playing for two days however, he claimed that he had been in a nearby hospital to get checked for a concussion. After the approval of a substitute, he flew off to Dubai to play in the ILT20 after another physiotherapist cleared his way.

He bowled 21 overs on the first day and scored an unbeaten 39 runs on day 2. He reached 123 runs in 87 balls before leaving the field early on day 3. He was not available in the second innings and just a few hours later, he was seen playing for Dubai Capitals where he made 34 runs in 12 balls. Then he played 3 more matches for the team until they eventually won the title.

SLC has filed a chargesheet against Shanaka mentioning that the referee Wendell Labrooy was misled into believing Shanaka has a concussion to approve a substitute.

The SLC CEO Ashley de Silva told ESPNCricInfo, “SSC [Shanaka’s first-class club] would probably be conducting their own inquiry as well”.

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-2660 size-full" src="https://cricketcounty.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Dasun-Shanaka-2.webp" alt="Is Dasun Shanaka In Trouble?
In his defence, Shanaka said, “SLC and the club knew I had to leave,” Shanaka said. “I only came back because there was a request from the SSC to play this first-class match. But my other team wanted me back, as I’d helped win two games for them earlier in the tournament.”

If found guilty, Shanaka could face fines, suspension or even a temporary ban from the domestic teams. Earlier, Lasith Malinga was also in a similar situation when he played for Mumbai Indians in the IPL however, he did not abandon his domestic match to play the international one.

Sri Lanka has a rich history of making world-class spinners. From Muttiah Muralitharan the king of spin to Rangana Herath and Wanindu Hasaranga. These bowlers have bamboozled batsmen for decades. In the 2024 Lanka Premier League (LPL) a new name has been shown as a potential successor to this legacy his name is Prabath Jayasuriya.

Prabath Jayasuriya a Rising Star

Prabath Jayasuriya is a young off-spinner from Matara. Sri Lanka has taken the LPL by storm. His ability to turn the ball prodigiously and deceive batsmen in flight has been a major talking point throughout the tournament. Jayasuriya who is new to the big stage has impressed fans with his poise and control evoking memories of the great spinners from Sri Lanka’s past.

A Legacy to Live Up To

Sri Lankan spin bowling has always been about guile variety and the ability to abapt to different conditions. Muralitharan’s doosra a ball that spin away from the right-handed batsmen became his signature ball. Herath, on the other hand was known for his accuracy and his ability to exploit even the slightest imperfections on the pitch.

Prabath Jayasuriya seems to be following in these footsteps. He possesses a natural ability to spin the ball and has a good repertoire of deliveries including the carrom ball and the arm ball. His bowling spells have been economical putting pressure on the batsmen and creating scoring opportunities for his team.

Impact on the LPL

Jayasuriya’s performance has been instrumental in the success of his team in the LPL. His ability to take wickets at crucial junctures has helped shift the momentum in matches. Batsmen have found it difficult to pick his variations, and his tight bowling has restricted the flow of runs.

The emergence of Jayasuriya has added a new dimension to the LPL. It has brought back memories of Sri Lanka’s dominance in spin bowling and has given fans a reason to be excited about the future.

Early Days and What Lies Ahead

Jayasuriya’s journey in cricket has just begun. He has impressed everyone with his talent in the LPL but the real test will be his performance at the international level. Sri Lanka has a strong pool of spin bowlers and Jayasuriya will need to continue to develop his skills and prove his consistency to earn a permanent spot on the national team.

With hard work, dedication, and the right guidance, there is no doubt that Prabath Jayasuriya has the potential to become a world-class spin bowler and carry forward the rich legacy of Sri Lankan spin bowling.
