Australia’s Test and ODI skipper Pat Cummins is enjoying his time in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Recently, he was released from the responsibilities of captaincy in the shortest format of the game and he is now playing the game to the fullest.

Pat Cummins Picked His First Hat-Trick In T20 World Cup 2024

Pat Cummins continued with his purple patch as he claimed his first hat-trick for Australia in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. He finished his spell with the figures of 3-29 off four overs while spinner Adam Zampa also impressed with 2-24.

Pat Cummins is only the second Australian, and seventh overall to have a hat-trick in the history of the T20 World Cup.

The Australian bowlers kept Bangladesh on the back foot as they restricted them to a below-par 140/8 in their opening match of the Super 8 stage. Chasing the target, David Warner led the chase with his second fifty of the tournament. Australia won the game by 28 runs via the DLS method to remain unbeaten in the tournament with five wins on the trot.

Speaking after the match, Pat Cummins who Mitchell Marsh replaced as T20 skipper, said:

“Really, we’ve kind of ticked off everything we could’ve possibly done so far. Overall it was a fairly polished performance, which is kind of what you want in Super Eights.”

“We feel like we’ve got all bases covered. So yeah, we’ll rock up there. The best thing of all this is I’m not captain or selector or anything, so I just turn up and have no worries.”

“Obviously, two points, but also to get a good run rate. And it feels like over the course of the tournament so far, just about everyone’s had a game.”

Further, Cummins also expressed confidence in his teammates’ versatility, acknowledging his team’s readiness to adjust in different situations. He said:

“We’ve been pretty open with that, that anyone in the squad’s ready to play and the bowling line-up might change at different times, the batting line-up, the batting order might change and things like that. It’s got to be adaptable.

“Obviously, Ash (Ashton Agar) played last game, he bowled really well. So, we feel like we’ve got all bases covered.”

“We’ve used 12 or 13 players so far and everyone’s had a couple of performances where they should take confidence out of so — yeah feel well positioned obviously doesn’t mean that much but feels like we’re in as good a place we could be.”

Pat Cummins On David Warner

David Warner, who is all set to retire from international cricket after the T20 World Cup 2024, is having a great time in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Talking about Warner’s last hurrah, Pat Cummins said:

“It feels like every ICC event he’s always up there in the runs tally. I love the way he’s been taking the game on, some big sixes even over the deep fielders.”

He added: “So, he’s always got a huge appetite for runs, particularly in these tournaments. And whether it’s knowing it’s his last hurrah or whatever, he looks in great form and continues to play with that freedom, which is great.”

Could this be the last World Cup for…? 

David Warner (Australia)

The Aussie opener has already announced his retirement from international cricket and confirmed that the T20 World Cup 2024 would be his last assignment in Australian colors.

Waner marked his international debut for Australia in a T20 match against South Africa in January 2009. He became the first Australian cricketer in 132 years to be selected for a national team without having played domestic cricket.

The 37-year-old had time and again lived up to the expectations of his team. He has won three ICC World Cups and one ICC World Test Championship with Australia.

Rohit Sharma (India)

The Indian skipper is another big name who could be appearing in his last World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean. Rohit Sharma is one of the two players (the other being Angelo Mathews of Sri Lanka) who have contested in each edition of the T20 World Cup since its inception.

Sharma donned the Indian cap to mark his international debut with a one-day match against Ireland in Belfest on 23 June, 2007. He was a part of the team that won the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.

The 37-year-old has had a great run as a captain for the Indian team. He would look to end his World Cup campaign on a high and bring home the World Cup 2024 silverware.

Kane Williamson (New Zealand)

Kane Williamson has led New Zealand to victory in the ICC 2021 World Test Championship and to the finals of the 2019 Cricket World Cup and 2021 T20 World Cup.

Williamson (33) was first included in the New Zealand squad in March 2010 for the second Test against Australia. However, he could not play the match. He then made his debut for the black caps in an ODI match against India in August 2010. 

Quinton de Kock (South Africa)

Quinton de Kock (31) announced his retirement from one-day internationals before playing in the 2023 World Cup. The South African opener is known for his dashing batting style.

The wicket-keeper batsman made his international debut in the first match of a home T20 series against New Zealand in December 2012.

South Africa hasn’t won any ICC trophy and if the team looks to win the T20 World Cup 2024, then de Kock has a crucial role to play.

Angelo Mathews (Sri Lanka)

Angelo Mathews (37) was part of the Sri Lankan team that won the ICC 2014 T20 World Cup and made it to the finals of the 2011 Cricket World Cup, 2009 T20 World Cup 2012 World Cup.

Mathews, (37), marked his debut for the Sri Lankan national team with an ODI match against Zimbabwe in 2008.

The Sri Lankan all-rounder has played all the editions of the ICC T20 World Cup. He holds the superfluous record of being the first batter in the history of international cricket to be timed out without facing a single delivery.
