With Pakistan’s announcement of boycotting the T20 World Cup 2026 match between India and Pakistan, the cricketing world is filled with questions.

The question being asked is what kind of punishment the ICC may impose on Pakistan and whether this is the first time that such an incident has occurred.

The much-hyped match between India and Pakistan, scheduled to take place on February 15 in Colombo, is now in jeopardy. The Pakistan government has already made it clear that they will take part in the tournament but will not play against India.

ICC Faces Tough Questions After Pakistan’s Boycott Announcement

According to reports, the ICC has urged Pakistan to reconsider their decision. Meanwhile, talk of taking tough action against the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has gained momentum. However, history reveals that match boycotts are not something new in World Cups.

In the past 50 years of ICC World Cups, very few matches have been boycotted. It is important to understand how the ICC dealt with such situations in order to forecast the future of Pakistan.

Teams That Boycotted World Cup Matches in the Past

1996 World Cup: Australia and West Indies Boycott in Sri Lanka

The first major boycott took place during the 1996 Cricket World Cup, which was jointly hosted by India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

Australia and West Indies boycotted their matches in Colombo.

This came after a devastating bomb blast by the LTTE in Colombo a month before the World Cup, which took the lives of 91 people.

Both teams expressed their serious concerns over security.

ICC Decision:

No fines or penalties were imposed.

Australia and West Indies lost their points.

Sri Lanka received a full complement of points, which resulted in them claiming their first World Cup championship.

2003 World Cup: England and New Zealand Both Refused To Play Their Matches

a similar situation happened at the 2003 worldwide championship held in South Africa. The English did not participate in their match against Zimbabwe because of the politically troubled state of Zimbabwe. New Zealand boycotted their match in Kenya due to security reasons.

ICC Decision:

Both teams forfeited their match points.

Neither team faced any punishment in the form of fines or suspensions.

Why Pakistan’s Case Is Different from Other Teams That Boycotted World Cup Matches?

Although the previous Teams that Boycotted World Cup matches were not penalized, the case of Pakistan is not as simple.

Pakistan had agreed with the ICC and BCCI to play all their matches in Sri Lanka due to security concerns in India.

The boycott seems to be a politically based boycott.

Failure to play without a valid reason may amount to a breach of ICC tournament regulations.

Will Pakistan Escape ICC Punishment?

At this point, everything is up in the air. The final ICC decision will depend on the following:

• Whether a valid reason has been given by Pakistan
• Whether the boycott is considered a breach of contract
• The political sensitivity of the India-Pakistan relationship

If the ICC considers this a non-security, unjustified boycott, Pakistan will face repercussions that go beyond simply losing points, which is what happened to previous teams.

Women’s T20 World Cup commenced this Thursday 3rd of October with the opening match of Bangladesh vs Scotland. The match started with Bangladesh batting first and presenting a low total on the board of 119 runs, however, the bowlers came into play and claimed their 1st victory of the tournament.

Even the brilliant innings of opener Sarah Bryce could not help Scotland win against Bangladesh in the Women’s T20 World Cup match and they had to face defeat by 16 runs in a close match. Bangladesh thus won a match in this tournament for the first time since 2014. This global tournament started with this match of Group B played in Sharjah.

Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bat first in this match, but Scotland’s bowlers led by Saskia Horley performed well and restricted Bangladesh to a score of 119 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs.

Sobhana Mostari scored the highest 36 runs for Bangladesh, while Saskia took three wickets for 13 runs in two overs. In reply, Bryce played an innings of 49 runs with the help of one-four on 52 balls, despite this Scotland could only score 103 runs for seven wickets in the stipulated overs.

Earlier, Bangladesh’s batting was poor and no batsman could make a big partnership. Apart from Sobhana, opener Shathi Rani scored 29 runs, and then lower-order batsman Fahima Khatun scored 10 runs in five balls to take the team to a fighting score. Bangladesh’s bowling was good which successfully defended the low score.

Apart from Bryce, no batsman from Scotland could impress

While chasing the target in the opening match of Women’s T20 World Cup, Scotland’s batting was poor and apart from Bryce, no other batsman could impress. Only three batsmen for Scotland were able to touch the double-digit mark.

Bryce was handling from the other end, but no one could stay at the crease to support him which became a big reason for Scotland’s defeat.

The group stage of the ICC T20 World Cup is over and eight teams have advanced into the next round. The Super 8 stage has India, Australia, England, Afghanistan, South Africa, West Indies, Bangladesh and the USA cricket team in contention.

The team kicked-off the tournament by winning against Canada in the opening match. However, the real stimulation came when they handed a rude shock to Pakistan by beating them in a thrilling super over, in one of the major upsets of the tournament so far.

The USA team was only defeated by India in the group stage, while its match against Ireland was abandoned due to rain.

“I think it’s a big thing for us… And not only for us, but for fans around America as well. We really appreciate them for sure. And, not only for the fans, but for the younger generation in America as well, it is really good”, USA captain Aaron Jones said after sailing into the Super 8 round.

The USA cricket team played their first international match in 2004 against New Zealand in London. In 2019, the team was granted an associate member status by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The USA entered the T20 World cup as an underdog. Most of the players in the USA squad are part-timers, pursuing other professional careers. But the way they have owned the field is heart-warming.

“There’s a couple that do just play cricket. Corey Anderson‘s been around for a long time and he plays a bit of franchise cricket now. Andries Gous does the same. There are a lot of guys who do part-time work. There’s a couple that are full-time employed as well, who have to take their leave to come and represent USA in a World Cup, said USA coach Stuart Law.

The USA Cricket team has been a force to reckon with. With its progress into the second leg of the tournament, the host has automatically qualified for the next edition of the T20 World Cup that is the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

The New York Cricket Stadium known as Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York is getting dismantled. Having hosted eight matches in the Group stages of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the much-talked-about cricket stadium will become a thing of the past as disassembling work has already begun on the site.

Why is New York Cricket Stadium getting demolished?

It was part of the pact between the ICC and Nassau County to hold eight world cup matches at the Eisenhower Park. Both the bodies signed an agreement on November 18, 2023 to host the T20 World Cup matches after which the make-shift stadium would be broken down.

The New York Cricket Stadium was part of a 19-acre area of the Eisenhower Park which was a basic strip of plot used for recreational activities without a proper drainage system. It was being used as a parking lot for amphitheater events at times.

The Pop-Ups stadium with a capacity of 34,000 was brought to life in just 106 days. The actual construction on the site commenced on February 18, just four months ahead of the start of the T20 World Cup.

The drop-in pitch at the New York Cricket Stadium was imported from Adelaide, Australia while the special grass was grown in Florida, reportedly.

The same stadium will now be completely razed down in the next six weeks.

The Problem In The Pitch

The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium gained criticism from across the board for its slow outfield and bouncy pitch. It became a norm to see batters struggle to score runs at the ground.

Experts and fans complained about the inconsistency and unpredictability of the pitch. Both chasing and defending the targets in the very low-scoring games became difficult.

The pitch threw some capricious results. While teams batting first won three of the eight games, those chasing have won five times. The highest total that was posted at the New York Cricket Stadium was that of 137 for 7 by Canada playing against Canada. The most successful chase was recorded by India by scoring 111 for 3 against the USA team.

The average first-innings total was 108 as recorded in the eight matches of the tournament played here. For the record, no teams crossed 100 in the first two matches. 

The ICC has acknowledged the condition and attributed the uneven bounce to grassy veins being compressed by rolling.

The USA became the first team to be imposed on the stop-clock rule. The host country was awarded the 5-run penalty in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Playing its group match against India, the USA was not ready to bowl the next over within 60 seconds after finishing the previous one.

It happened at the start of the 16th over of the second innings at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York. Surya Kumar Yadav and Shivam Dube were on the crease for India, chasing a target of 111 runs.  

As the new rule was applied by the umpire, the required run for India was reduced to 30 runs off 30 deliveries instead of 35 off 30 balls.

The umpires had warned the USA skipper, Aaron Jones twice for violating the stop-clock rule but at the third instance of the offense, the umpire called for the five penalty runs.

The extra five runs released the pressure from the Indian batters on a pitch where they were scoring runs in a challenge.

The USA coach felt that the five-run penalty had minimal impact on the outcome of the Group A match.

“We’re only a fledgling team. There’s plenty to learn. There’s not just the cricket aspect of the game of cricket, but there’s also the other intricacies that need to be embedded. It’s a rule that’s only just come in. A lot of our players wouldn’t have heard about it before we played in the Bangladesh series or the Canada series earlier this year,” Law said.

What is a stop-clock rule?

The stop-clock rule was introduced by the ICC to speed up the progress of the match. It has been made a permanent feature in men’s ODIs and T20s formats from June 1.

•         According to the stop-clock rule, the fielding side must start an over within 60 seconds of the completion of the previous over.
•         The counting of the 60 seconds will be displayed on an electronic clock on the ground and the third umpire will decide the starting time of the clock.
•         Two warnings will be issued in case of violation of the rule, and after that, a five-run penalty will be imposed per incident.

“The clock will be used to regulate the amount of time taken between overs. If the bowling team is not ready to bowl the next over within 60 seconds of the previous over being completed, a five-run penalty will be imposed the third time it happens in an innings”, ICC said in a statement.

David Warner (Australia)

The Aussie opener has already announced his retirement from international cricket and confirmed that the T20 World Cup 2024 would be his last assignment in Australian colors.

Waner marked his international debut for Australia in a T20 match against South Africa in January 2009. He became the first Australian cricketer in 132 years to be selected for a national team without having played domestic cricket.

The 37-year-old had time and again lived up to the expectations of his team. He has won three ICC World Cups and one ICC World Test Championship with Australia.

Rohit Sharma (India)

The Indian skipper is another big name who could be appearing in his last World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean. Rohit Sharma is one of the two players (the other being Angelo Mathews of Sri Lanka) who have contested in each edition of the T20 World Cup since its inception.

Sharma donned the Indian cap to mark his international debut with a one-day match against Ireland in Belfest on 23 June, 2007. He was a part of the team that won the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.

The 37-year-old has had a great run as a captain for the Indian team. He would look to end his World Cup campaign on a high and bring home the World Cup 2024 silverware.

Kane Williamson (New Zealand)

Kane Williamson has led New Zealand to victory in the ICC 2021 World Test Championship and to the finals of the 2019 Cricket World Cup and 2021 T20 World Cup.

Williamson (33) was first included in the New Zealand squad in March 2010 for the second Test against Australia. However, he could not play the match. He then made his debut for the black caps in an ODI match against India in August 2010. 

Quinton de Kock (South Africa)

Quinton de Kock (31) announced his retirement from one-day internationals before playing in the 2023 World Cup. The South African opener is known for his dashing batting style.

The wicket-keeper batsman made his international debut in the first match of a home T20 series against New Zealand in December 2012.

South Africa hasn’t won any ICC trophy and if the team looks to win the T20 World Cup 2024, then de Kock has a crucial role to play.

Angelo Mathews (Sri Lanka)

Angelo Mathews (37) was part of the Sri Lankan team that won the ICC 2014 T20 World Cup and made it to the finals of the 2011 Cricket World Cup, 2009 T20 World Cup 2012 World Cup.

Mathews, (37), marked his debut for the Sri Lankan national team with an ODI match against Zimbabwe in 2008.

The Sri Lankan all-rounder has played all the editions of the ICC T20 World Cup. He holds the superfluous record of being the first batter in the history of international cricket to be timed out without facing a single delivery.

The Babar Azam-led Pakistani cricket team has received criticism and trolled on social media following their six-run defeat in New York on Sunday, June 9th, in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. From hilarious memes to Pakistani fans taking out their frustrations via rant videos, social media has been buzzing with posts mocking the Men in Green.

Amidst all this, Delhi Police also joined the bandwagon, poking fun at Babar Azam and his squad for losing another match against the Indian cricket team.

Delhi Police took to their official X (formerly Twitter) handle and asked the New York City Police Department about there being noises in the city, suggesting that one was coming from the Indian fans, celebrating the win, while the other could be of broken television sets of the Pakistani fans. DP wrote:

“Hey, @NYPDnews. We heard two loud noises. One is “Indiaaa..India!”, and another is probably of broken televisions. Can you please confirm?”

India Defeated Pakistan In T20 World Cup 2024 Clash

Talking about the IND vs PAK match, after winning the toss, Babar Azam elected to field first. The Pakistani bowlers made a blockbuster start and helped their side take the driving position in the crucial clash. Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf picked 3 wickets each, while Mohammad Amir also contributed by picking two wickets.

For the Men in Blue, their star keeper-batter Rishabh Pant was their knight in shining armor, with the bat. He played a crucial knock of 42 runs under pressure. After the brilliant bowling performance by the Pakistan team, the Indian cricket team was bundled up for just 119 runs in 19 overs.
