The news was officially confirmed by the Delhi Capitals side on Tuesday.

Bell, now 43 years of age, possesses extensive global experience coupled with technical skills as the Capitals seek to have a better season in the upcoming IPL 2026.

Delhi Capitals’ IPL 2025 Recap

Delhi Capitals had a frustrating season in the IPL 2025 tournament. They managed to finish the tournament as the fifth team on the points table. This team had just one point shy of qualifying for the playoffs. In response, the franchise decided to bolster their support staff.

The inclusion of Ian Bell is also considered a strategic initiative in light of sharpening the batting department.

Ian Bell’s Role in Delhi Capitals Setup

As assistant coach, Ian Bell will work closely with:

Head Coach: Hemang Badani

Team Mentor: Kevin Pietersen

Director of Cricket: Venugopal Rao

Bowling Coach: Munaf Patel

Both of them, Bell and Pietersen, have been part of the England cricket team, so that adds strong international pedigree to Delhi Capitals’ think tank for IPL 2026.

Ian Bell’s International Playing Career

Ian Bell had a distinguished international career for England, which involved appearances in:

118 Test matches

161 One-Day Internationals

8 T20 Internationals

His strongest format was Test cricket, where he scored:

7,727 runs

22 centuries

46 half-centuries

Bell’s technical proficiency and experience against top-tier bowling attacks are expected to benefit Delhi Capitals’ batters in pressure situations.

Ian Bell’s Coaching Experience

After retirement from a professional cricket career, Ian Bell has progressively accumulated a remarkable coaching record:

Coached England age group and junior teams

Served as Batting Coach to Sri Lanka in their tour of England during 2024

Briefly worked with the New Zealand men’s side ahead of the 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup

Assistant coach for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred

Diverse exposure of such a nature in international and franchise cricket makes Bell a valuable pick ahead of IPL 2026.

Why Ian Bell’s Appointment Matters for IPL 2026

Delhi Capitals are looking to Ian Bell as a stabilizing presence, a wealth of batting experience, and a modern approach to coach who can help lessen the gap between how they perform in the regular season (Scoring Runs) than they would perform in playoff games.

With the coaching staff in place and a mindset of winning, DC should be successful in finding ways to win exciting games during IPL 2026.

Delhi Capitals have made a strong move towards building their core by naming Ian Bell as their assistant coach.

As an experienced player with a lot to prove at the IPL 2026 level, Bell will have an impact on the batting success of the DC and their chances of winning the tournament.

Hampshire County Cricket Club has just signed the young Indian batting sensation, Tilak Varma, for a short but exciting stint in the County Championship 2025. Varma’s stint with Hampshire will last for nearly two months, starting from June 18 and going on until August 2.

During this period, he will be available for four four-day matches in the County Championship Division One. This contract comes amid Hampshire’s efforts to strengthen its team, fresh off an impressive runner-up finish last season, its best in almost two decades.

Who Is Tilak Varma?

Tilak Varma is not just a promising name; he has already showcased immense talent on the international stage. With 29 appearances for India across formats, including 25 T20 Internationals where he has scored nearly 750 runs with two centuries, Tilak brings a blend of youthful energy and proven skills. Remarkably, as of mid-2025, he holds the second-highest batting average in men’s T20 international cricket, which speaks volumes about his consistency and class.

Though primarily famous for his T20 exploits and IPL campaigns with the Mumbai Indians, where he has amassed close to 1500 runs in 54 games, Varma has also been steadily proving his mettle in the longer formats. In first-class cricket, he boasts an average above 50, with five centuries and four fifties in just 18 matches. This quality makes him a perfect addition to Hampshire’s chase for top honours this season.

So, cricket lovers, keep your eyes on Tilak Varma as he lights up the County Championship with his exciting brand of cricket. His short stint at Hampshire not only boosts the club’s hopes in the competition but also offers a glimpse of India’s next big batting star making waves on foreign soil.

Known for their legendary bats and balls, Kookaburra embarked on an ambitious experiment in the English County Championship, aiming to shake things up and prepare players for international tours.

But now, after three seasons of trial, the million-dollar question remains: Was the Kookaburra experiment a smashing success or a total flop? Let’s find out.

Kookaburra Experiment: Success Or Failure

The Kookaburra Experiment itself was driven by a desire to introduce the Australian Kookaburra cricket ball into the English domestic circuit, replacing the traditional Dukes ball that has long been a staple on home turf. The idea? To groom bowlers for the conditions they’d face Down Under in the Ashes series and beyond. Sounds logical, right? But the devil’s in the details.

Players and fans soon noticed something strange. The Kookaburra ball just didn’t behave like it does in Australia. Instead of buzzing off the seam and swinging in the air, the ball was about as lively as a damp rag. Matches turned into sluggish affairs, with flat pitches and the ball refusing to cooperate. One eye-popping stat from these games was a jaw-dropping 266 runs scored by a player with only one first-class century to his name. That’s not the kind of excitement anyone hopes for when watching cricket!

The ball’s sluggish performance wasn’t just a one-off gripe. Fast bowlers who usually make their mark using movement and bounce struggled to find rhythm. Even international stars found the conditions challenging, with some taking more than 190 runs for just a handful of wickets. The lack of seam and swing on the Kookaburra on English soil highlighted a fundamental mismatch; the soil and climate in England just don’t support the brand-new ball’s characteristics.

Naturally, the county teams weren’t best pleased. Fans complained about boring matches, and cricket bosses began questioning whether the experiment was worth continuing. The England management, despite initially championing the switch, eventually backed off, giving counties the power to decide. The outcome? After heavy discussions, the counties voted to ditch the Kookaburra ball from the Championship starting next year.

The Kookaburra experiment was bold, perhaps too bold for the English pitches. Sometimes, innovation means learning what doesn’t work just as much as what does. And for cricket fans, it’s a reminder that tradition and local flavour often hold the key to the sport’s spirit. So, was it a success or a failure? Mostly a failure on English grounds, but a valuable trial nonetheless.

The masterful leg-spinner has confirmed his return to Northamptonshire for the 2026 season, marking his third consecutive summer with the English county side.

And yes, this comeback is not just about taking wickets; it’s also about bringing some serious spin wisdom to the young guns hungry for guidance.

Yuzvendra Chahal’s Stint With Northamptonshire

Yuzvendra Chahal’s stint with Northamptonshire will kick off in the second half of the 2026 season, where he’ll be seen unleashing his magic both in the County Championship and the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

The man who’s already taken 44 first-class wickets and seven List A wickets at Wantage Road is upping his game this time around, adding mentorship to his role, helping nurture promising spinners like Nirvan Ramesh and Stuart van der Merwe. Talk about carrying the torch while still being a wicket-taking machine!

Northamptonshire head coach Darren Lehmann is absolutely buzzing about Yuzvendra Chahal’s return. He called Yuzi “a magnificent asset to the squad,” bringing loads of class, experience, and spin wizardry to the team. Lehmann isn’t just excited about Chahal’s impact on the pitch; he’s equally pumped about the mentorship Chahal provides to the up-and-coming talent. That experience? Priceless.

Now, Yuzvendra Chahal’s 2025 at Northants was cut short due to some personal reasons, but his love for the club and the county circuit never faded. “I’m so excited to be back,” Chahal said, and it shows. At 35, there’s still plenty of cricket left in the tank for this spinner who has been a key bowler for India in white-ball cricket with over 200 wickets under his belt.

That’s your fast take on Chahal’s much-anticipated comeback, a story of cricket, passion, and the joy of mentoring the next generation. Stay tuned; 2026 is going to be spinner heaven at Wantage Road!

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has placed the country on a high-risk watch list, citing governance disputes inside Cricket Kenya that continue to spiral out of control. If the wrangles persist, Kenya risks suspension, a move that would freeze international funding and shut the country out of ICC-sanctioned tournaments.

A senior government official has already sounded the alarm, saying, “The ICC position as at now is that Kenya is in breach of their membership criteria,” and warning that suspension looms large.

It has to be noted that Sports Digest has been covering Cricket Kenya’s controversies for a long time now. In fact, we were the ones who exposed the reality of Cricket Kenya in front of the world, and that spotlight has played a big role in driving the changes we are now seeing. This news was also first published on Sports Digest.

Boardroom Drama Reaches Boiling Point

To prevent a full suspension, a majority of Cricket Kenya’s board members have tightened their grip. They accuse a faction of destabilizing the game and have moved decisively against top officials.

In June, Chairman Manoj Patel was stripped of all executive powers. This month, the board turned its guns on Acting Treasurer Kennedy Obuya. At a Wednesday meeting, six directors – Pearlyne Omamo, Thomas Odoyo, Tariq Iqbal, Beryl Oyugi, Mary Maina, and Pauline Njeru – unanimously passed a vote of no confidence in Obuya, with CEO Ronald Bukusi also in attendance.

The resolution accused him of abuse of office, mismanagement of resources, failure to carry out his duties, and tarnishing the sport’s reputation. The board also barred Patel and Obuya from accessing Cricket Kenya’s bank accounts, instructing the secretary to notify the banks immediately.

Ironically, Obuya had supported Patel’s ouster earlier this year but has since teamed up with him in the current standoff. Together, they held what they called a Special General Meeting (SGM) last Sunday, despite the Sports Registrar confirming its postponement. The majority board dismissed it as unconstitutional and declared all its resolutions null and void.

Instead, they have scheduled a legitimate SGM for October 19, with the sole agenda of electing a new Vice Chairman. Sports Registrar Rose Wasike is expected to attend that meeting.

Kennedy Obuya and Manoj Patel Face Financial Heat

The wrangles have now attracted the attention of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Cricket Kenya chair Manoj Patel and acting treasurer Kennedy Obuya have been summoned to answer questions about the alleged misappropriation of more than Ksh 26 million.

Letters sent to both officials accuse them of “stealing agent C/sec. 283 of the Penal Code and connected offenses relating to the withdrawal and usage of Ksh 26, 758,114/= in the financial year 2024 being property of Cricket Kenya, an associative sports organization registered under the Sports Act and further allegations.”

Obuya has been ordered to appear before investigators on October 2, while Patel will follow a day later. The letters warn that “failure to comply with these summons constitutes an offense liable to prosecution under Section 52(2) of the National Police Service Act No. 11A of 2011.”

Two Camps, Two Competing Agendas

The Patel-Obuya faction insists the current majority board members are illegitimate, claiming their terms expired. They have even gone as far as appointing Walter Trent as a new CEO to replace Ronald Bukusi, while dismissing any communication from the board as null and void.

On the other hand, the majority faction has been cleaning house. Just two weeks ago, they terminated a contract with a Dubai and India-based sports promotion firm, accusing it of breaching governance standards and trying to improperly influence board members through “financial inducements and external pressure.”

ICC Intervention Could Change Everything

The ICC is following developments with growing concern. The World Body is expected to send a representative to Nairobi soon to meet Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya. Whether the federation can stabilize before then remains the big question.

For now, players, fans, and administrators alike are left holding their breath. A suspension would not only cut off funding but also shut the doors of international cricket to Kenya, a blow that could cripple the sport for years to come.

The speed bowler, who had started his career on a promising note, is the latest addition to the list of injured players on the cusp of the blockbuster T20I series against Australia.

Will O’Rourke Injury Update: Stress Fracture Confirmed

Will O’Rourke initially reported back stiffness on the third day of the first Test against Zimbabwe. Additional scans discovered a stress fracture that will keep him out for at least three months.

O’Rourke will then go through a rehabilitation phase targeting strength and conditioning, with reassessment planned after the initial recovery period.

Head coach Rob Walter was optimistic that the injury won’t need surgery and was impressed with O’Rourke’s toughness.

“We’re really feeling for Will at the moment and wishing him a speedy recovery,” Walter said in a New Zealand Cricket (NZC) statement.

“He’s had such a promising start to his international career. While stress fractures are common among fast bowlers, we’re optimistic about his recovery timeline.”

If his recovery goes smoothly, O’Rourke might come back in time for West Indies’ Test series against New Zealand in December, though that is far from certain.

Further Injury Misfortunes: Allen, Phillips and Santner Also Out

Finn Allen:

Just underwent surgery for a stress fracture in his right foot

Will take around three months to recover fully

Will miss the entire Australia T20I series

Glenn Phillips:

Side-lined with a groin injury which also kept him out of the Zimbabwe tour

Confirmed to be absent for the T20I series against Australia on October 1, 3, and 4 in Mount Maunganui

Mitchell Santner:

Returned from The Hundred with groin discomfort

Will have abdominal surgery

Included in the preliminary squad with the hopes of recovery before the Australia series

Mitch is a world-class player and an integral member of our T20 unit,” Walter said. “We will keep a close eye on his rehabilitation and provide him with every opportunity to be available in time.”

Opportunities Amid Setbacks

Apart from the setback, new coach Rob Walter pointed to the opportunities for new players to shine. It is disappointing to lose Finn and Glenn, who have been important contributors in our T20 batting line-up.

But, as happened in Zimbabwe, that also provides an opportunity for others to rise in what is shaping up to be a thrilling series against Australia.”

Ben Sears Returns to Fitness

There is some positive news for the Kiwi camp. Pace bowler Ben Sears, who sat out the Zimbabwe tour with a side strain, has regained full fitness and should be ready for consideration against Australia.

What This Means for New Zealand Cricket

The timing of Will O’Rourke’s side strain is bad, considering New Zealand’s congested white-ball schedule. He is now officially ruled out for:

The T20I series vs Australia

Future games against England and West Indies

If his rehabilitation goes according to schedule, O’Rourke could be back in time for the series against West Indies in December. New Zealand will now need to carefully manage squad depth with several key players unavailable.

With Will O’Rourke ruled out of action for a back stress fracture, while important players such as Allen, Phillips, and Santner also injured, New Zealand’s preparations for the Australia T20I series have been derailed.

Yet, there is some solace in the opportunity for fringe players to make their case for a spot in the national team. Eyes will now be on the team management’s choice and the rehabilitation of injured stars over the coming weeks.

Despite an explosive half-century by Dewald Brevis, Australia won the match and the series 2-1.

Australia Survives Middle-Order Collapse in 173-Run Chase

Australia chased 173 with an early flourish courtesy of Mitchell Marsh, who hit early sixes from Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi, and a boundary off Kwena Maphaka. Travis Head also gained steam with two boundaries before being dismissed for a laboured 19.

Marsh drove his way to a 35-ball fifty, taking on Senuran Muthusamy with two sixes and keeping the scoreboard moving. But South Africa mounted a comeback, with Maphaka sending Marsh and Cameron Green back in an over to bring the visitors back into the game.

Maxwell’s Match-Winning Knock Saves the Day

With 122/6, the game had begun swinging South Africa’s way, but Glenn Maxwell had otherwise ideas. He waged a measured counterattack, hitting key boundaries against Maphaka, Ngidi, and Rabada. He escorted a scorching 30-ball half-century and turned the game Australia’s way.

In the face of a late setback when Corbin Bosch sent Ben Dwarshuis and Nathan Ellis packing, giving away just two runs in the last over before the penultimate one, Maxwell kept his cool. Requiring 10 from the last over, he did a couple, followed by a boundary off point, and concluded the match in fashion with a reverse-hit four that left him unbeaten on 62 off 36 balls.

Brevis Fireworks Light Up South Africa’s Innings

Earlier, South Africa was riding on a scorching knock by young sensation Dewald Brevis, who hammered 53 off a mere 26 balls. After Aiden Markram departed early to Josh Hazlewood, Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Brevis gave the team momentum.

Brevis scored his half-century in only 22 balls, the quickest T20I fifty by a South African, also a new record by him, with four huge sixes in an over against Aaron Hardie. But after Nathan Ellis bowled him out with a smart slower bouncer, South Africa lost momentum, folding from 110/3 to 138/6.

Late showers from Rassie van der Dussen (38*), Muthusamy, and Rabada brought them to 172/7, a fighting score, but not quite enough to suppress Maxwell’s brilliance.
